I am currently trying to find songs and monologues for college auditions over these next 2 days because I want to work on them at a summer precollege program at CMU. I read that Someone Like You should not be done. Is this true? Also, does anyone know if the song The Beauty Is from The Light in the Piazza is overdone or even acceptable for college auditions? Thanks.

Someone Like You may be a little overdone, but if you love the song and do it well, I don't think that you should count it out completely.

The Beauty Is may or may not be overdone... I think I saw a few people perform it last year at auditions. It is a beautiful song, so I certainly wouldn't mind hearing it more than once :) ... it is somewhat difficult to play, however, and sometimes the accomps. at auditions are not as wonderful at sightreading as one would hope.

You may be considering either The Beauty Is, or Someone Like You... but, just in case you were considering them as a package... I would suggest having one of your audition pieces from a more classic musical (written prior to 1965-ish).

Have a great time at CMU pre-college. I have a few current students who have done the program, and loved it!

pharmom5, I think one of the things students will be doing at the CMU precollege program will be working to find appropriate material. If you read the precollege thread under Carnegie Mellon (at the big list at the top!), you will read about kids working with teachers at the program to find material. So don't feel you have to go in having everything pinned down. Have a great summer!

Thankyou so much, I really appreciate the responses. Your comments helped a lot. Thanks again, and have a great summer!
