I'm a current junior so I want to begin preparing songs for my auditions.
For the schools I'm looking into I'll need a ballad & uptempo, one being contemporary & the other classical.
I would really appreciate song suggestions!!
I'm a mezzo, and while I have a good high range I would have to say that my lower range is more rich.
I'm pretty sure my range is about E3-F5/G5.
Thanks for your help :)

Hi TheatreDreams: Welcome. Do a lot of reading here on the CC MT Forum, but know that you probably won’t get song suggestions. Without knowing you, your type, and your voice, the contributors to this forum cannot really help. You should speak with your drama teachers, vocal coach and/or an audition coach who could help you select the perfect repertoire for your type and personality. Song rep is very personal (and sometimes very competitive and strategic) so you need to put work in to selecting what’s right for you. Break a leg.

MTTwinsinCA is absolutely correct about us not being any good in helping you with your choices, although there is another reason why you’re not going to get many responses on here. Everyone guards their audition material like mad because it’s the one thing that they have over everyone else: material that works great for them and for their type. Sorry I couldn’t be of much help. I recommend an audition coach to help you selecting your material if you can afford it.

A girl from my daughter’s class used a song that my daughter performed because she liked it. However, it was NOT for her. In fact, it was a very poor choice for her! She didn’t get into a single MT program- not a single one! However, I will suggest that you google overused college audition songs and make sure you don’t do any of those!

Also, someone who really understands the college audition process (like a coach or a voice or theatre teacher who has successfully helped students prepare for college auditions in the past) will be able to help you choose and prepare your material.

In college auditions, it is just not at all about singing the song well. Pretty much any good singer can sound good. That’s not all they’re looking for. It took my D a LONG time to get that through her head. She is a singer, first and foremost. And she was just so STUCK on how her songs sounded. For her regular show auditions that had always been enough to get her the lead. It took someone who really understood the process to break through and really get her to see that she needed to pick a song that would allow her to truly play a character in addition to sounding great.

And that is another reason no one can suggest songs for you. None of us can see what “type” of character you would be good at playing.

But the bottom line is that people are very guarded about giving out their material. It took them a LONG time to find just the right pieces and they don’t want to see 15 people show up with the same ones at their next audition!
