College Basketball Discussion '09-10

Considering that 35 teams have won the NCAA Tournament all-time, and UCLA has won 11, Arizona 1, California 1, Oregon 1, and Stanford 1, meaning that the PAC-10 is responsible for 15 out of 71, or 21% of Tournament championships, or rather that 5 PAC-10 teams have won the Tournament at least once, meaning that 1 out of 7 schools to ever to the Big Dance are in the PAC-10, this all means that yes, of course, the PAC-10 has been a weak conference in terms of basketball.

The SEC has 3-4 strong teams? The only school in that conference that is in the conversation for the national title every year is Kentucky. Tennessee has never gone past the Sweet Sixteen. EVER. Alabama, Auburn and Vanderbilt have zero Final Fours in 19, 8 and 10 trips, respectively. The only other schools in the SEC with titles are Florida and Arkansas, and those are very recent (2006, 2007, 1994).

Wow, I actually said the Pac-10 tends not to be so strong. Anyway, you’re flat out wrong. The Pac-10 has had 53 tournament teams in the last decade. That’s an average of 53% of teams making the tournament. Only once in the last decade has the Pac-10 sent as few as 3. As a comparison, since growing to 16 teams 4 years ago, the Big East has sent 29 teams to the tournament, or ~45%.

If you want to rank by NCAA titles:
11 - UCLA
11 - Atlantic Coast
10 - Big East
10 - Big Ten
9 - Southeastern
5 - Big XII

Georgetown lost today.

Lots of good games today (and a few shocking upsets).

Brackets!!! Gahhhhh I love March Madness. What are your picks?
I had Georgetown going to the Elite 8, yikes. Kansas is my overall winner, over Kentucky (with Syracuse and Villanova rounding up my final four). The one big upset I hope to happen is Texas A&M over Duke.

Understatement of the season :)

Oh my. Big East. Yikes. If there was a loser today, it was the Big East. For the sake of the conference, Syracuse, Louisville, Pitt, and West Virginia need to win their first round games.

This is also HUGE support for a 96-team tournament. So many upsets all over, with competitive games even in the 2-15 and 3-14 seeds, it’s easy to argue the position that (most) everyone in the tournament deserves to be there. And therefore the 31 teams below them probably do to

(not that I’m saying there should be 96 teams…)

I don’t think it really supports having 96 teams. Watching Robert Morris come close to knocking off Villanova is thrilling; watching them try to beat Georgia Tech would probably be rather dull.

I didn’t see much excitement over Jacksonville’s come back win against ASU a couple nights ago.

Yeah, I see your point. I guess it rather supports the current format, actually.

11 Washington vs 3 New Mexico tomorrow… don’t count out the Huskies on that one.

Holy crap that just happened…Kansas loses to Northern Iowa!

Good news for my Terps though. If we can beat MSU tomorrow, we play NIowa for a trip to the Elite 8.

Yahoo is now running a consolation pool starting with the sweet sixteen. hahahhaha this tournament is awesome…except it’s missing one thing…my beloved Tar Heels! :(

We had that nice NIT win yesterday though! LDII with the buzzer beater-great game.

@somebodynew…no such luck. I really thought that Maryland was going to get the win in those last few seconds, and then Lucious made his amazing buzzer-beater shot at the top of the key. Kudos to a great game though, way to come back from a 17 point deficit. Michigan State must make the effort not to underestimate Northern Iowa (especially since that seems to have been Kansas’ downfall). And I hope Lucas’ injury isn’t that serious and that he will be relatively healthy come Friday…otherwise this could have a significant impact on our game as well

Re#188, the comment:

"I agree, Cornell is good but will never be able to compete with schools from the big 10, etc. "

… is not looking really spot-on just now. Perhaps “never” was a little strong??

Sorry I just couldn’t resist.

Has anyone even gotten a near-perfect bracket?

fa-la-la-rena, I was totally and absolutely crushed when that shot went in. I had already been resigned to losing when we were down by 15, but then the Terps had to go and give me hope again and bring me to the point where I thought we were gonna win…and then that shot. ARGH.

Go Northern Iowa! Though if Summers shoots the 3 like he did against us today, it won’t matter if you all can’t drive the lane against NI.

PURDUE! Boiler UP!

^That was a nice win. Chris Kramer = Clutch

As of Saturday night, 12 out of 4.78 million brackets on ESPN.com were 8 for 8 on the first half of the Sweet 16. These are not perfect brackets to that point, just the 8 Sweet 16 teams.

42.2% of the brackets on ESPN.com picked Kansas to win (next highest was Kentucky at 21.4%)

60 brackets have Northern Iowa meeting St. Mary’s in the championship game.

Harambee, I agree. Kramer was clutch when we needed him especially with Hummel gone. If we don’t go anymore into the tourney, we got next year. Great recruits and our starting five will be returning. All of them except for Lewis Jackson will have 4 years of experience together.

I have to admit that Wisconsin-Cornell game was absolutely disgusting to watch.

I thought Syracuse had a good chance to win it all, but they are killing it right now.
