College Basketball Discussion '09-10

^Yeah, that’s like MSU last year. Our best players were sophomores and we had a slightly mediocre performance throughout the season but we were able to step up during the tournament. If 3 of your top players are freshmen, I wonder how good Texas will be 1 or 2 years from now.

Yeah except our 2 best players are seniors and next season we’ll only have 1 good recruit. But in 2011 we should be a top team if this year’s freshman and next year’s freshman return because our 2011 recruiting class is already loaded.

Nice win for Texas against UNC!

If they play like that plus better interior defense & getting Hamilton and Lucas involved offensively they will be the best team in the country! Hamilton did NOTHING against UNC and he’s an amazing player. I was hoping he would show the country that he’s an elite player. That was Lucas’ first game of the season so I’m not too worried about his performance.

MSU is gonna be tough because both teams are playing on little rest. This is were the depth of Texas should help though. But Texas played really hard and up tempo against UNC so they’re probably gonna be more tired. I can’t wait!

Kentucky gets 2,000th win.

Is John Wall the best in college basketball?

@MNT wins/Jimgotkp

You guys put NU a bit too low - should be more like 7th (and that’s w/ one of the best players in the conf., Coble, out for the season).

Harambee got it right.

One thing about MSU - the Sparties always tend to play better later in the season, however, the lack of consistent play from their young bigs inside is troubling and unless it improves, will cost them in the Tourney.

Currently, yes.

John Wall or Derrick Rose?

Texas is DOMINATING! They just beat the 2 teams that went to the NC last year in a row!

I still think they have so much more potential and haven’t even played close to their best basketball yet.

Texas is scary good; I think they are better than Kansas at this point and should be ranked #1 when the new polls come out.

Yeah Texas should be ranked #1 because of their tough schedule, but I still think Kansas is the team to beat right now.

Jordan Hamilton is the next Kevin Durant.

No, I think Kansas still deserves to be No.1. We’ll see if they can keep it when they play Texas on Feb. 8. Texas has had great performances though.

He’s definitely up there, but I give my vote to Xavier Henry of Kansas. Don’t get me wrong, John Wall is a great player, but he hasn’t played against tough competition apart from UNC. Even though Kentucky is undefeated they’ve had slightly mediocre performances against teams like Miami (72-70), Connecticut (64-61), and Stanford (73-65, OT). Kansas has been more consistent and they’ve won against quality teams like Cal, UCLA, and Michigan by good margins, largely due to Xavier Henry.

I gotta second Harambee on Xavier Henry too.

After todays WVU game, I feel like Purdue will win by +15. SHU almost beat WVU but lost their poise in OT. For a #6 ranked team, even though rankings don’t really matter, it was quite a poor performance by them imho. I haven’t watch any other their games this year and may be making a comment way too early but I feel like it will be an easy game in a few days.

Even though WVU struggled, I think Purdue is very overrated. I think WVU has better talent. I’m predicting a WVU win.

I think Wall, Henry, & Bradley are amazing freshman. I’d go with Wall right now because he looks like the best player in the country. But Henry is awesome too. Wall could play PG at a high level in the NBA right now, I don’t think Henry or Bradley would be as good at this point.

If I was voting for best player in the country I’d vote Wall #1, Damion James #2, Henry #3.

I have to say, that after my low expectations for this year, I’m thoroughly impressed with Kevin O’Neill. After firing Tim Floyd, I think USC upgraded coaches big time, and if O’Neill can recruit well, he’ll have a lot of success here.

In the early season, the Big 10 was overrated (my own prediction included). It’s the ACC and the Big East again as usual (think maybe Villanova can pull off the incredible dual football-basketball championship?)

Watch out for seton hall, that’s my sleeper pick this year

“It’s the ACC and the Big East again as usual”: But the Big 12 is the better than both this year.

And I wouldn’t really consider Villanova as winning the dual football-basketball champions because in football they’re in the FCS, not FBS (doesn’t really count if they’re in the FCS).

The school with the best possibility for dual championships is Texas because they are in the NC for football and they are the second best in basketball.

The FCS is the official NCAA Division 1 football championship, not the FBS, whose championship is organized by sponsors and the BCS.

So it’s Villanova that has the possibility of official dual championships, while Texas might have the best team in both.

Um, the Big Ten won the Big Ten-ACC Challenge? I may be biased but I think it’s all about the Big Ten and Big East this year. Almost every year the Big Ten is treated like @&#^ from everyone and Katz is very anti-Big Ten every year. ESPN predicts Mich St. winning the Big Ten. I agree Purdue may be overrated but they have TWO legit AWAY wins, this WVU game will basically decide if they deserve the #4.

The FCS is Division 1-AA, the FBS is Division 1-A. The FBS is the true “national championship in the highest level of play in the United States”. If Villanova wins football-basketball it won’t be as big compared to a school who’s in the FBS, like Florida a couple years ago.

And the Big 12 is the best conference this year. Kansas(1), Texas(2), Texas A&M(19), KSU(12), OK State, TX Tech(23), Oklahoma. All great teams. Best conference, no question.

I admit the Big 12 is pretty good this year and is competing on the same level as the ACC and the Big East, but I wouldn’t say better. The Big East is deep and all but 3 or 4 teams are playing good basketball to start out conference play.

The Big 10 is doing just fine also, but they are not the best conference this year. The bottom half of that conference is not getting it done.

True, it’s not the same as (say) Florida winning the FBS-level BCS championship along with the NCAA D-1 basketball championship, but it would still be very impressive for Villanova to capture both the NCAA D-1 basketball and football (FCS) championships, and they are in excellent position to possibly win the Big East.
