how comfortable are college beds? I had ordered a package from my college consisting of mostly bedding and it came with a mattress pad and a egg-crate cover thing... Will a memory foam topper make the bed a lot more comfortable than the egg-crate thing?

Well, I would say this might vary from college to college, but when I stayed overnight in a dorm at my college for orientation, the beds were awful. I usually sleep on a couch, so I can avoid the 30 year old sagging mattress in my bedroom that tilts one way so I always roll to the edge, and when I'm not home, I'm snoozing on the paper thin, holey futon in my boyfriend's room.

The dorm bed I slept on was easily the most uncomfortable "bed" I've ever slept on. I might as well have spread my sheet out on the floor because the carpet had more give. If yours are as bad I'd advise plenty of padding.

i would say just wait until you get there and figure it out

i agree 100% with hyperjulie, they cant be considered beds. my wood floors at home are probably more comfortable and im sure the college egg crate doesnt make it much better. memory foam will work wonders if your school allows them (some with strict fire codes won't). i got one made of "magic gel" and i love it so much, more comfortable than my bed at home.

go to linens n things and try EVERY pad until you find something that will give you good sleep.

My bed was barely soft, but it was alright and was still able to sleep every night. You could push on mine and it would compress by 2 inches.

I realllllyyyy dont like egg crate pads, because it feels soo weird to touch and sleep on...so I would recommend a memory foam pad, I got mine at Target for pretty cheap. And I would definitely use a pad even if it is comfortable without one. Reason: think of how many people have slept on that mattress. Dont you want as much as possible between you and the germs??? I know that sounds stupid, but psychologically I would feel better.

I picked up a fiberbed for my son. I was wondering if people use a mattress pad on top of or underneath the fiber bed? Or just the sheet over the fiberbed?

Hah I actually have a feather (or maybe it's fiber) bed, a thick memory foam pad, and a big mattress pad over all of that. It's quite comfortable! I would say that it's a good idea to put a mattress pad over the fiber bed, not just for the sake of comfort, but it also helps to keep it in place (otherwise it generally slides all around).

I think most students use some sort of mattress topper (if not multiple ones)
Memory foam is really good, and actually makes a considerable difference

I don't know about you, but I love having a really comfy bed. My mattress isn't that bad and I still got a memory foam thing. I say that you should go ahead and get one if your school allows it.

idk my bed isnt that bad
maybe i should get memory foam for the regular school year...

Don't forget to FLIP the mattress around!!!

Just get a thick mattress pad and you'll generally be fine.

beware of creaking beds--i did a summer program at a college and every time you got up, there would be this extended crackling cellophane sound. it was pretty bad but you got used to it.

If the bed is uncomfortable and your roommate doesn't mind you might try placing the mattress on the floor.

...not to be the weirdo or anything ... but my bed is pretty comfortable, nothing on it except a sheet ... and i've felt that way for all my time in dorms ... maybe i'm just not that picky ...

maybe your college just has really good mattresses. Dorm mattresses are just notorious for sucking.

dorm mattresses SUCK!!!

lol i'm so glad I'm getting an apartment with a REAL bed. I don't have to wake up with a broken spine every morning. Good God it ruined my day.

Halfway through spring semester I shoved a huge piece of wood right in the middle of the bed to it wouldn't sink. Awesome sleep until RA told me it wasn't allowed. o_O

last year i bought i really thick feather bed...it was fine. Not great, but serviceable.

I hated my beds in the dorms. I was required to live in the dorms for two years at my school, and my back would always kill me when I woke up, even with the egg crate padding. Now that I'm in my apartment off-campus, I got myself a nice queen sized mattress with a 2-inch memory foam topper that makes it so much better.

can i add that everyone should seriously consider a cover for their dorm mattress? just imagine all the things a mattress in a college dorm can encounter. i wouldn't even want that touching my topper. gross.
