College candidates........

I haven't recieved any word from USNA yet, but I'm waiting triple Q'd w/ MOC nomination, btw Senior in HS. I'm not doubting myself, however I was wondering what other "declinees" do after highschool if seeking to re apply for 2001. I pretty much have eveything ready to go as far as back up colleges, but I am still very motivated to apply for Class of 2011, if for some reason I do not make the cut for 2010. How would the process work, in college and all? How would I remain competitive in my District, even though I would have already graduated? USNA is my dream, and I WILL NOT take no, at least not this time around. Any input from anyone that has gone through this would be greatly appreciated.......

zero-

Class of 2011 will be so much pimper than the class of 2010 anyways...

Go to college and study your tail off, then do the application thing all over again.

"Pimper"? Uh..... OK. ???

Pimper is a phrase that we use in the dirty south. Atleast here at my ghetto school.

Spider's plan was to self-prep at NMMI or go to a really strong ROTC program like Texas A&M.

Well, for what it's worth, tell him not to give up. I guy in my company and in the class of 1992 went to USNA after having spent three YEARS studying at Perdue. He was one hell of a smart guy, too.

Here is how the College Admissions Process works:

Go to college and work your tail off (as Zap said)
USNA recommends a miniumum of 16 credit hours (nothing compared to what you take here), I recommend taking 18-20 (even though I did not). Also, USNA recommends a miniumum of a 3.0 GPA, strive for a 3.5 or better. You should be taking courses similar to that of a plebe; Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, etc. (check USNA Academic page for sample schedule).

Involve yourself in athletics (ATHLETICS!!!): intramurals, local road races, etc.

Participate in campus activities, student government, leadership activities, community service.

Apply online for a preliminary application (yes, again!). Do this at the earliest possible date, so you can receive the candidate package early.
Fill out and get your high school to fill out the same forms (again!). Try to complete the forms as quickly as possible and as accurate as you can (you can re-use your personal statement, unless you want to ammend it). I believe you probably will have to take the CFA again, too! The DoDMERB exam is good every 2 years. Your BGO will be in the area of the address you provide USNA...in the event that he/she is in your hometown and not at college, email USNA and request the name of a BGO close to your college...it might be more convenient for you, in the event, you need to meet face-to-face. A BGO interview must be done again! I cannot recall whether you must re-submit SAT/ACT scores...if you had pretty good scores (i.e. around 1300 or above), then you probably DO NOT need to take the exams again.

Apply for a nomination (you guessed, again!). You apply to your home state and district MOC's (unless you change your residency, which probably won't happen!). Let the MOC staff know you are in college (if your college is far away from home), that way you probably can get a phone interview, instead of a face-to-face.

The process: The Admissions Board WILL NOT review your file until your fall semester grades are in (the file hits the late February/early March board). Thus, you want to challenge yourself, academically, but also get high grades. You automatically receive bonus points for re-applying and other points are awarded on a GPA sliding scale...the better the GPA, the more points! The more rounded your application, the better shot!

Update USNA: If you send your forms in over the summer...USNA has no idea if you are participating in athletics or clubs/ECA's. Therefore, send an email to your BGO & Regional Officer letting them know what you are doing! Once a month is good enough. Don't "annoy" the Officer, just show them you have a strong desire and you are doing everything possible to make yourself competitive.

On a second note, I know Admisisons is/was moving over electronically...so that may change how information is submitted.

p.s. didn't read this for grammar/spelling

BTW, you still might get into NAPS. If offered, GRAB IT. If you graduate from there, you STROLL into USNA.

Ask me how I know! :D

<---- NAPS '87.

Hey Zaph - you entered NAPS the same year many of the 2010 mids-to-be were born. Sorry to be the bearer of that little revelation, but I remember when it struck us that all the corpsmen working for my DH were NOT EVEN BORN YET when he joined the navy. That was a really weird feeling. Boy, 20 yrs can get behind ya pretty darn quick!

Don't give up on squeezing back into that uniform one day! (Just to try it on of course - like for a reinactment, or some other HISTORIC (read "ancient") event.

jk :D

Everyone's hating on Zaphod and the older folk today.

Zaph is my wise sage. I will always listen to him!

I was rejected last year. Went to a private prep school and reapplied. It worked.

I can handle the grades, community service and leadership are okay, but I really want to improve my "athletic" profile, that is if I take this path. BTW, I wouldn't think twice about NAPS, I WANT THE ACADMEY...haha. I have good ties with my BGO, and MOC staff, but I just want to have my s*** straight if I have to go through with this. Thanks Jadler, really good info, I apreciate it very much. I'm hoping for the best as far as c/o 2010. =)

zero-

To improve the athletic profile, get involved in sports or sports clubs. Also, work out so that when you show up to the interview, they KNOW you're in shape.

Sigh....... If only I'd follow my own advice. :(

jadler03,
Just wanted to thank you for providing some guidance for the candidates who end up reapplying in the next application cycle. You appear to already have some fine leadership skills. Good luck.

"Don't give up on squeezing back into that uniform one day! (Just to try it on of course - like for a reinactment, or some other HISTORIC (read "ancient") event." bz2010

zaphod, are you going to take that kind of smart talk? Okay folks, zaphod admits to being treacherous (for the record).

Another thing to consider: If you do take the college route, and if you take as many "plebe" courses as possible (see above), then you'll be able to validate them when you get to USNA, and either take more electives or skate, depending on your desires.

Other edge of the sword, of course, is that you'll be carrying a much more difficult class payload as a plebe. It WILL be worth it later, though.

My dear, I couldn't fit my INTELLECT into my Firstie uniform, let alone my body! Age, work experience, and continuing education have a way of expanding the mind. ;)

And Haagen Dazs has a way of expanding everything else! :D

ZeroNegligence, if you have any question regarding applying to USNA as a college freshman, you can feel free to PM me. I was medically DQed my senior year and went through all the obstacle as a Mizzou student.
