Hi all,
I have a question...A school that I was just recently admitted to (and am dying to attend) changed my EFC on the Fafsa. I received an e-mail from Fafsa showing the correction, so I called Fafsa and they said this college (my dream school :)) submitted the change.

I did not know they could do that?

I have yet to receive a financial aid package from this particular college, should I assume they are going to make me a nice offer? My EFC went down by almost $2,500!

Also, should I notify the other colleges I have been accepted to of the EFC change? Many of the other colleges have already sent me my financial aid packages.

Thanks in advance for any answers! :)

Wow, no one out there has ever heard of this? eek :(

A college may adjust your efc based on a number of reason. Perhaps you had a special circumstance or made an error on something or something they make take out of the equation for calculating purposes. It only means something to THAT school. Other schools can decide on their own calculation. They don't have to match the same efc. Now if it was a gross error you made and only one school caught it, that's another story. In our case, it was due to medical bills and a special circumstance. One school adjusted a lot, next one did nothing. Good Luck

I would suggest printing out the old SAR and the new SAR and comparing them to find out what the change was. If you find you did make an error that they have corrected then you should definitely make sure the other schools get the information.

Two years ago that happened to me, too. I had inadvertently left out the contribution to my IRA. I remember I was pretty amazed that a school could do that, but apparently they can, and did. I was glad they caught the error, but I was still pretty much astounded that this happened.

Ok..so what I found out is that this particular college had a separate financial aid letter you sent in along with a copy of my parents taxes. When my mother sent it in she put under "special circumstances" that one of my sisters will be moving back in when her husband is deployed. Also, my parents had paid for a summer college program last summer and they made allowances on the FAFSA for the education credit.
So these subtle changes ...changed our EFC by almost $2,500!

I love this college!

Should I still contact the other schools I am considering and make them aware of the EFC change or not?

Thanks for everyone's help!
CC rocks! :)

If it was under Special Circumstances, that's Professional Judgment, which other schools do not consider - they have to make their own decisions on PJ. If you haven't given the other schools the same info you gave that school, you may want to do that - and ask them how to apply for Special Circumstances consideration. I know the school where I work would not make an allowance for the class you took last summer, for example.
