Hi, I would like some opinions on the colleges I’m in between to possibly help me make a decision. Right now, I’m between Ohio state, university of Florida, and university of Georgia (all out of state). Ohio state and uga are around the same cost with scholarships (around 30k/yr) whereas UF is 39k. However, there is this new bill that could give me in state tuition for having grandparents in Florida making it cost 16k. I’m just not sure if it will pass. Regardless, I am stuck on which college to go to. I visited Ohio state and LOVED it. I loved the campus so much and the street and the surrounding areas. I also got into the health science scholars program which gives me a small community and helps me in my field of interest. I haven’t visited uga but it seems beautiful and a good town. I’m just concerned about the emphasis on Greek life bc In college I want the option to decide if I want to join rather than feel pressured. I visited UF which I liked sort of, but did not love. I felt cold vibes there and didn’t love the town. However, I know the ranking is the best out of these three at #30 vs osu at #53 and uga at #47. UF is also a school that has many in Greek life. I am also Jewish and would love to join a Hillel but know that hillel isn’t that strong at uga as very little students are Jewish. (Also just to throw this out there’s also Tulane and umiami but these would be more expensive options and I don’t think it’s worth the debt). also If the Florida grandparent bill passes, it seems like the obvious choice bc it will be way less money, but something about it I didn’t love and I felt more comfortable and at home at Ohio state. This is basically where I’m at so I would love to hear input and opinions about these schools.
I would go to OSU, but the Jewish community at UGA is pretty good, and whether you go Greek isn’t a big deal. Can’t help much with info on UF. Went to UGA, but a big OSU fan. OSU was both my daughter’s first acceptance, and I was pretty excited about the possibility of them going there, but their ED acceptances came shortly after so it wasn’t happening.
Congrats on three great admits. Don’t worry about ranking. All three are solid flagships. Florida is “ranked” higher than Texas, William & Mary and others - but most would not know that. Rankings are - just a formula/opinion of US News. They are 3 flagships and no one will consider one over another when you apply for a job. All are hard to get into - actually maybe UGA most difficult.
You made your decision - you LOVE Ohio State. You didn’t love Florida. Of the three, UGA has the smallest Jewish life by far.
Good luck and congrats on being a Buckeye.
Go with your gut!! You seem to have really loved OSU, so I would definitely go for it. There’s no guarantee for the bill for UF, so I wouldn’t place your hope there. As many others have said, most employers aren’t going to have much of a difference of opinion between any of these state flagships. You also have an awesome opportunity for scholars at OSU, so I think that is another good support for choosing it.
TOSU makes the most sense: it’s got strong academics, it offers the environment you want, you like it, and you got into a special program that will offer support and community.
Btw the grandparent bill may not pass: why would Florida residents want to see their tax money go to OoS grandchildren by cutting their own children’s state grant system? So, you’d end up with the most expensive choice that you don’t even like much instead of the more affordable choice you prefer…
OSU. You’re so fortunate to love a school that you got into. You’ll always wonder if you don’t pick the one that you love.
