You base the decision on how much you can afford vs. the specific programs in each school. There isn't a huge difference in reputation between the schools. Both are very good.

i got 4k from UMD and 0 from UDEL, im confused

3.7 gpa 2050 sat
nj resident how about you...

efc on fafsa was 51k so no financial need.

mwagner, what is the intended major? That would make some difference in how people respond.

engineering.

Well, again, which kind of engineering. For example, if you said aerospace, then it would be UMD, but if you said chemical, then the answer would be UD.

DiNoo9- Yes you are!

I think U Maryland has a better reputation and is a bit more competitive..

Would you need to take out loans to afford Maryland? In that case I would go with Delaware. If you can handle the extra cost, then I would recommend visiting both schools to see which one feels like a better fit to him. I live in Maryland, and I agree that Maryland has a better reputation, but some students here prefer Delaware because it is smaller and is in a nicer town. On the other hand, most of the students I know who attend Maryland love it.

OP - Presuming the engineering specialty your S wants is roughly equivalent between the two schools, take UDel and use half of the savings each to send him somewhere in the world each January:

Interesting. My son got nothing from UMD and $3k from UDel.

I got the sense that UDel put less importance on the SAT scores for deciding on merit aid (someone from admissions confirmed this on Saturday when we were there). When I called UMD to inquire about why my son had not heard from them regarding merit money, I was told that in most cases you needed a 1390 to get any money, and there was no revisiting the decision.
