College Clothes

Nothing annoys me more than when some kid visits an amazing school, like Yale which I live close to, then wears a Yale sweatshirt everyday after his/her visit. As a junior, this is only the beginning. I expect that throughout the next year, kids will wear clothes from schools that they will never get into in order to seem smarter, as if they have even the slightest chance of getting into these schools. This is partially a public service announcement: if you visit a school you are not required to buy 12 articles of clothing from the college and wear them to school the following day. I plan to not buy a single article of clothing from any college until I get into one, about a year from now. Does anyone else find this annoying?

I'm also planning on buying a generic "College" t-shirt to mock everyone else - http://www.frattoys.com/images/college2.jpg

Yeah. Some kid at my highschool goes around wearing a Harvard sweatshirt when there is no way in hell he is going there (I think he applied ED to Hofstra or something)…

Haha, I know a kid who wore a Yale sweatshirt the entire month before he applied to schools. I think he did ED to Northeastern (not to be confused with Northwestern) or something. Another girl wears a Columbia sweatshirt everyday, and she’s a junior who does not have the grades for Columbia. I don’t get some people…

I don’t wear any college apparel in college. I only bought a couple of shirts after I got into college, and I stopped wearing them because band shirts look a lot better.

I’m one of those kids hahah. After I became obsessed over Wellesley, I ordered a gray Wellesley crewneck online and had it shipped to my house hahah. I guess the difference is that I have an adequate chance of getting in…?

I usually get an article of clothing for each visit. It’s like a collection for me. So far I have sweatshirts from Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton and UPenn and sweatpants from Yale. I wear them to school sometimes, but no one cares because my school is very competitive so they’re on the same page as me. But I don’t get a ton of clothing from one place… that’s just weird.

Would you feel equally angry if he was wearing a local state college’s shirt? I find it unfortunate that school spirit can be taboo for certain schools, even after you get into them. Either way, I personally don’t display much school spirit because I feel as though it alienates people. Some of the best conversations I’ve ever had were with people who never went to college, and never plan to. Once you wear certain shirts, those people are far more likely to expect you to look down upon them, and that stifles the best type of interaction-- namely, spontaneous discussions that lead to interesting stories about the past.

I have no problem with kids wearing stuff from schools they’ve been accepted to. When I get into college I will be completely decked out in my school’s apparel. I don’t mind if other students wear clothes from schools they will likely get into, or even schools that are reaches. I just hate it when the kid with a 3.0 GPA wears a Princeton shirt.

On a separate but related note, particularly to BlueDevil, what do you plan to do with your collection if (when) you are rejected from the schools you have clothes from? My dream school is Penn, and if I bought Penn apparel and got rejected I would want to tear the clothes to shreds. I’m not saying you will get rejected, I hope you get into wherever you apply, but rejection is a possibility. I feel like kids who buy stuff from every college they visit are not planning for an inevitability, unless you only apply to safetys. I’m open to all criticism and these are simply my opinions, I’m not saying what I think is right or wrong.

My collection is simply a pile of memories. When I’m older, I’ll look back and think of the places that I dreamed of getting into, remember the visits, and the hard work I did back in high school. I’m completely open for rejection. I’ve told myself many times that I’m not going to cry over rejection. Whatever is meant to be will be. I’m not saying that I’m one of those kids with a 3.0 GPA wearing a Princeton shirt. I have a 3.8 so it’s not like those top universities are completely unattainable for me. It’s very unlikely that I’ll get in to any of them, but I still have a shot IMO.

I wear a Towson University t-shirt sometimes and there’s no way in hell I’d stoop down to Towson. It’s just a T.

Wear a Michigan shirt to the Columbus area, that’s when **** goes down.

I feel you. I personally don’t understand why a person would WANT to wear a shirt that they honestly won’t get in to, but then again, I didn’t buy any college apparel until I had been accepted to and decided which school to attend; now I have tons of their stuff. To me, it just seems pointless to own college clothes to an establishment that you don’t go to. I means… what purpose does it serve?

i wear tons of Stanford clothes (like extreme sometimes) cuz it’s my fav school and my mom went there. i have no intent on going to stanford or even applying (my grades DO suffice though, its not like im an idiot trying to look smart). i hate my high school so i need spirit for some school, right? lol but it’s just fun for me

I am soooo tempted to wear Penn stuff, my dad has like a full closet of Penn clothes, and I plan on applying ED to Penn next year. I need to resist the urge…

I think you guys are over reacting. They are wearing a Harvard shirt with a 3.0 gpa…so what? I am sure they know themselves they probably won’t get in. Don’t see the point in making a big fuss over it.

^ agreeeeed

^ I agree, I don’t really see what the big deal is.
My siblings have bought me college apparel from the school they attended. I wear the clothing, but I will not be applying to those schools

Oh. I thought this was a thread about college fashion.

I’d just like to say this…I heard somewhere that it was considered “bad luck” to wear a school’s clothes that you want to get into. No one needs to take it seriously, it’s just a superstition, but I’m going to buy college clothes just for the school i will be attending.

^ I hear that if you wear the clothes of a school, it’s actually good luck. Even if you have a 3.0 and no extracurriculars you can get in anywhere-- but you have to cross your toes while you’re wearing the clothing. Good luck!
