I was talking to a coach at the D1 school and had been emailing back and forth and had talked on the phone. Then the coach talked about an admissions pre read. The coach asked for all my admissions information and said that he would connect with me the week after recieving all my information. It has been around 3 weeks since I sent my information. I have a good GPA and have good swimming times that meet the requirements for the team. I’m not sure what to do as I have sent another email asking if they had recieved my email but haven’t heard back. What should I do? Is this normal??
There could be a lot of reasons but honestly it’s not promising that the coach has gone silent at this point in the year. I’d follow up with a call or text next week, just checking in to see how the pre read went and asking about next steps. It’s possible the coach is busy and just hasn’t been checking email but I’d expect that if you were high on the recruit list, locking you down to an OV would be the thing he’d be busy with. Others with more swim specific knowledge may have better advice.
You sound like an excellent student with strong swim times.
When you emailed the coach requesting for an update, did you try emailing all the coaches (head coach, assistant coach, etc.)? I think there is a chance that the coach may have moved. One of the coach that my daughter was in contact with moved to a different team mid August. In fact, out of the twenty plus teams that my daughter was in contact with, two head coaches and three assistant coaches ended up moving to a different team.
^ very good point.
Coach correspondence can be delayed by weeks as they are obviously really busy. It’s hard not to read anything into it I agree. But it’s not necessarily a bad sign. They may also be thinking about their rankings and overnight invites too. Persistence!
In my swimmer’s case, every time a coach went silent, it was permanent. Coaches would call, offer an OV, and say, “I’ll send you a list of dates,” and then ghost her. She would ping him once or twice, but that was always the last response. Sometimes, we would see a commit post on Swimswam shortly thereafter (often showing that they’d signed someone slower than her–baffling), but mostly we never knew why she’d fallen off of their board. It happened two or three times, not only to her but also to her friends who were recruiting at the same time. Coaches don’t like to say “no,” so they say nothing. So certainly there could be other reasons, but do keep in mind that it might just be that he is pursuing someone else.
