College coaching locally for Acting/MT?? Would it work?? (I also posted this in the MT discussion)

My son just recently went through the application and audition experience and was academically accepted to all 14 universities he applied to and was accepted to a really great BFA Acting program. There is a local musical theatre teacher/community theatre director who wants to team up with me to start a consulting business for students who want to get into a BFA MT or Acting program. I would handle the academic side - applications, financial aid, scholarships, essays, resumes, and interviews, and she (and others) would handle the artistic side - monologues, singing, dancing, mock auditions. We don’t have anything like this in our area and a lot of the kids can’t afford a national coach. We are both very Type A and want to see our area kids succeed so I think we could manage the business side. I wanted to ask the CCers out there if they think a small regional college audition business where you mainly have more personal, face to face sessions would work? Would you have went that route if it was available? Other thoughts or ideas?

Thanks in advance!!! This truly is about helping the kids pursue their dreams but I want to make sure this is a viable venture.

@Griffilus Your idea could work as many cities have tons of talented kids but either not very good acting coaches or not strong vocal teachers. My daughter would have absolutely went that route but there wasn’t a talented enough acting coach within 100 miles of us. What city do you live in and where did your son end up?

Hi @2lights! Thanks for the feedback! I live in Lexington, SC (just outside of Columbia) and my S decided on the BFA Acting program at Elon. I work for a large university and my job experience can help with the academic side.

I would go for it. Even if there aren’t enough kids in your area you might be able to build up a following and get a ton of kids in the SC, NC and Georgia region plus there are always kids nationally that need help and can do lessons via the internet. There is never enough qualified people in your profession. If there was a company that could have done it all like your planning on doing we would have used them. We live in South Florida and we couldn’t find anything like that here.

Thanks, @2lights!!! I really think this is needed for the kids. There is an amazingly talented girl in a community theatre troupe with my son who I really think could have a career in performing arts. She kept telling my S that she thinks that when she graduates high school (she will be a junior), she guessed that she would go to college for nursing or teaching because she didn’t know how to pursue performing arts. I told my S to keep telling her to try. Her mom reached out to me to see if I would help her because performing is her true dream. So, I have met with them once, at no cost, and now she sees that she can do this and we are starting on her college list. It’s moments like this that tells me to try to make this work. Thanks, again!!
