College computer...

? most programs nowadays can run on both mac and windows and u dont have to buy mac-specific programs anymore

IM SO dumb when it comes to computers
i think technology conspires against me

Heh, that's a little like my dad. He'll sweat for hours over some problem (e.g. e-mail won't send), finally give up and call me to help him, and the instant I lean over his shoulder and * he * clicks send, it works. Works every time. Drives him mad every time.

cev - I can relate!

Haha that happens all the time with me... ;)

My dad breaks my sister's printer all the time. If he just uses it, it starts freaking out and printing 50 pages of weird symbols. I think my sister's gone through 4 or more printers so far while I've had one.

How many students at Princeton have macs? PCs? Is there ANY disadvantage at all about owning a mac rather than a PC?

Stay away from alienware. They're ridiculously expensive and not worth the cost. Many smaller companies will build you an alienware-like computer -- just as powerful, but significantly cheaper.

If you're looking for cheap but powerful laptops, check out the forums at www.notebookforums.com

I purchased a CL56, which is a rather generic but incredibly powerful laptop and have had zero problems with it.

For Mac vs. PC, i just find PCs to be easier to use. Yes, you can get viruses on PCs, but Princeton makes you install Symantec, which is updated everyday, so it is very hard to actually contract a virus off the internet.

Remember, you college will usually offer discount deals on laptops and software, so don't buy too early.

Do math/physics students need different computers, or no?

My dad's a computer scientist, lol so no problems there. He builds these impenetrable firewalls and random network stuff I don't understand.

But he's on a business trip so my mom broke the internet >.< so now I'm using my neighbor's wireless network...without them knowing :o I know I'm bad but I'm desperate! How can you cut me off from the internet (and cc!!)?

Why mac, shrek? Would a mac be as practical as a PC? What disadvantages would arise from using a mac at Princeton. You mentioned your brother...does he use a mac? What are his thoughts?
