College computer

what do you think would be most suitable for college life - a laptop or desktop? Secondly, what brand - dell, alienware, ibm…etc.?

My brothers have DELL laptops (the best that Dell has to offer and they are very expensive) and work like ****. Get the message, not to be ruid or anything, go with Sony or IBM. Thats my $.02

Is it okay to bring a desktop? I have a good laptop, but I play a lot of higher-end video games that I can only really play well on my desktop. Is there enough room in the dorms?

i'm gonna get a powerbook and i cant wait

ibm makes the best laptops
I think I am going to bring both though

just get a docking station with your laptop

Alienware is way over priced. IBM makes good machines but they too are overpriced. If your not used to an Apple, then its prob a good idea to go with a pc. Im getting and Asus or and Acer myself. Take a look at the Asus Z71V, awesome features especially if you play games, and its fairly cheap. The SAME EXACT notebook (made by asus, sold to Voodoo and then to you) that is sold by Voodoo is over 2,000!!!. Don't be fooled by resellers like Voodoo and Alienware that just paint the case a pretty color and charge you 500-1000 more.

Laptop = most suitable.

IBM is best for Penn because I guess they have this deal where they have a 24 hour service warranty on their laptops w. Penn. If you have any problems w. it, they'll come to your dorm and personally fix it, regardless of time, day, etc. And if you are going to Penn, I think you can get a discount through Penn buying laptops and it comes w. the above mentioned warranty.

after having gone through this last year I decided to go with a "top of the line" dell ( I got the Inspiron 9100). However, from using it this year I will tell you that everyone I know with a dell has had problems...

I really regret not buying the IBM offered through penn's computer connectionl. It's like a $3000 laptop sold for like 1450. I'd go with that or an apple. I've yet to hear of someone with an apple that got a virus or spyware.

pretty much don't get a Dell...

I got my Apple powerbook last year and I love it! I got the extended warranty too. I got my powerbook earlier cuz I wanted some time to get used to the machine before I go abroard. MS Office also has a student version for Mac, so it's all good. Connectivity to iPod and stuff is much better.

Get a laptop; it will be so much easier to use. I have a Sony VAIO that I will be bringing and it's an awesome computer.

i definitely suggest a laptop. i bought a desktop when I first went to college because back then laptoptops were more expensive and I did not like the way that they feeled when I typed on them (I used laptops in high school for statistics). I liked my desktop, which was a Dell....but I bought an Acer this past summer to take with me for my year abroad and I am kcking myself for getting a desktop. My lappy has better specs than my desktop and is a LOT more convenient! Move-in/out time is a PAIN with a desktop.

btw, don't go with a dell laptop.....they make great desktops but their portable units are horrible.

Apples are great, but if you aren't used to it, go with an IMB I'd say - out of sheer reliability.

Also, on every college tour, a parent has asked "Does this college have wireless internet." Well, you should take advantage of the wireless internet by getting a laptop. I think most areas in most colleges have it. Like if you are doing research in the library, you can use your own laptop instead of logging onto a lab comp and emailing yourself information.

VAIOs aren't good. My friend says they break down all the time, and they just cost more cuz they're labelled Sony. That's why I bought the Powerbook.

Get a laptop and buy it through penn's computer connection (don't worry, you'll get plenty of mail about it over the summer). I have the laptop they sold last year and I absolutely love it.. it also comes with the most amazing warranty.. my fan broke (the thing that keeps your processor cool) and therefore the computer wouldn't start (otherwise it would have melted in about 4 minutes..) IBM was here the next day to fix it.. it also covers if you spill on it.. like a can of coke...
they're also an amazing deal, and since a lot of people have them, the ITAs (which are the tech people in your building.. they're students, and they're really not available 24/7) are pretty comfortable with them..

IBM has a notorious bug "#1xxx". i cant remember exactly. it doesn't necessarily occur to your IBM laptop(though the rate is very high), but when it does, the mother board have to be changed at customer service. this bug has existed for many years but IBM refuses to admit it and argue that it is only "a regular problem".

i have one of my friends experiencing such a problem. and he ended buying a new BenQ JoyBook. it is nice...:)

IBM Thinkpad T-series, or an Apple Powerbook.

It's just that simple.

:)

I really like the IBM Thinkpads in terms of reliability - and hopefully you won't need a computer thats high powered for games and stuff (assuming you'll be enjoying the Penn social scene most of the time)

That being said, Counterstrike and most games work on IBM Thinkpads perfectly, though the graphics sometimes get choppy
