I think I’ll be able to leave this place after I matriculate. :X Right now it’s just my link to fellow classmates.
haha, thanks for the link! im showing this to MY mom
I went to preschool and elementary school with one of Barbara Brotman’s daughters! Heeh. I always read her column when I’m not at school. Small world, eh?
I thought I was just on here because it was the only thing I could afford after paying for my son’s college education. Now I find out that I’m an addict;–oh, well. (I did kind of figure it out once I passed the 1,000 posts mark.)
Congratulations, Roger. You have made life (and college) a lot more interesting for thousands (and probably soon to be a million) students and their parents–and helped answer at least a few thousand of life’s questions about colleges and universities that otherwise would have remained mysteries to the vast majority of people.
Woohoo, go HisGraceFillsMe! You’re as famous as TheVeganActress (quoted in an article from before, I believe). =p
Best part ever.
Addiction’s gotten a lot better after I’ve matriculated, but every time vacation rolls around, I’m on again. =P
I can pretty much stay away when I’m travelling, but as soon as I get home again, I think, “Can’t hurt to take a little peek…”
But why? Why is it so much more addictive than other forums? I’ve actually been shopping for another one. After all, my youngest has been accepted to a college he’s happy about it. While I might have a few of the usual “freshman in college” questions, I should pretty much be moving on. But I don’t think I will. I can’t find another place with the same attraction.
Since we home schooled our children and I’m involved in the home schooling community, I’ve been thinking of how I can parlay everything I’ve learned here into some kind of business. I have plenty to do. I don’t need another job. Why would I do that? Ahhh…so I’d have an excuse to stay active here!
Well, even if I never have a “real” job related to college admissions, can you imagine how I perked up yesterday at the family Easter gathering when my cousin said of her 11 year old son, “He’s thinking of going to Harvard or Yale”? Yes…I gave her a few things to think about.
CC is compared to porn and drugs?!
CC helps me do that…aw ****
Hahaha that was the funniest thing ever. So dead on. Right now, I’m at the height of my addiction because it’s just days before I get my decisions from colleges. Afterwards, who knows?
oh well. in life we all have an addiction - this is mine sadly!
All you parents who think you’re going to stop coming here once your kids have been accepted–just check out the Parent Cafe for great discussions on all sorts of things related to OUR lives. Face it–you’re not going anywhere!!!
I am just glad I have another kid (sophomore) so my next two years of addiction can be justified, however weakly!
I can’t remember what I did on the computer before I discovered cc. I spend a nearly equal amount of time on the net as I did before, I just can’t remember what I did!!! It’s a bit pathetic, actually.
Just like I always crack that I have no idea what my mother will talk about once I go off to college, because talking about the various admissions processes is her absolute favorite topic to discuss with family, friends, strangers, waitresses, bus drivers…
I should have given up CC for Lent. That would have been a true test. haha
Totally addicted. Sometimes, it keeps me from bothering my son, but sometimes, I think I bother him more with all the info I find out. He always gives me a dose of reality, though. “Mom, it’s not statistical data, only anecdotal.” and “Why do you think those people know anything about what admissions officers are looking for?” This last comment came when he was choosing courses for senior year and only chose 5 courses, one of them art. Students on CC were often taking 6 or 7 with 5 AP’s so I was a bit nervous. Well, he’s in at USC and UCSD. Maybe, you need the other level for HYP, but he didn’t want those schools anyway.
Interesting to see the screen names I see all the time quoted in the article. I actually gave Hisgrace some advice once, and I was glad to see she ended up at Sonoma State. Seems like a good fit for her.
If I had had access to something like CC when I was looking for a college, I would have done a lot better. I was almost perfect for Rice and didn’t even know that no one paid tuition there (back in the 50s) until a month before I enrolled at another college.
My folks had given me a tuition amount that they would cover. Rice fit their criterion (0 tuition), and I didn’t even know about it. I did look at Stanford (too expensive) and the Ivy’s were all-male and I did not want all-female.
Same here mamafish! Silly me for thinking that I’d stop coming here just once D1’s was off to college. (Then again, there’s a five year gap between my next two kids, so we’ll see how I can rationalize coming here once D2 is in her first year of college.)
mythmom told me I didn’t need any justification to keep coming here, so there you go–I always listen to mythmom. I guess it’s my hobby now ha,ha. I have been able to be helpful to some of my friends because of what I’ve learned here, but I’m not a crack dealer–I always suggest they stay away from this site.
