We’ve had an excellent college consultant who helped develop college list based on D19’s grades/test scores, brainstormed essay ideas over the course of several meetings, and edited essays with an eye for detail. Not only that, her confidence in D19 from the get-go had a noticeable and lasting impact on D19. But (you could sense that was coming, right?), she has a bit of an “I know you better than you know yourself” demeanor in addition to her (understandable) “I know this process better than you or your parents so take my advice.” Bottom line, now that apps are done, D19 would like to be done with consultant, but there is an expectation that relationship continues to assist with choosing among options and beyond. Those of you with experience, is this typical, required, beneficial?
Have you already paid for “full service”? If not, why not tell the counselor “we’ve got it from here, thanks” and just stop having your D reach out to her?
It is not unusual for college counselors to stay in touch with students through the May 1 decision date. Your daughter isn’t required to talk to the counselor - or take the offered advice - but I wouldn’t burn the bridge just yet… If your daughter gets waitlisted, for example, you may want help with managing that process (which should be included at no extra charge). And the counselor most likely did get to know your daughter well, and may be able to offer valuable feedback about your daughter’s preferences when and if she needs to choose among colleges.
If the apps are all in, just tell the consultant that you’ll “be in touch in April”. Whether that contact will be to seek further advice or just be one last follow-up to say “D19 is pleased to have accepted an offer of admission to Perfect U, and thanks again for all your help!” - is up to you (and can depend on how DD feels in April).
Some of these services include analyzing financial aid awards, as well as writing possible financial appeals. If this is an included service, you might want to check back in with the counselor once the acceptances are received.
