My parents can pay $25,000. What are my other options in terms of great colleges with rolling admissions at this point?
@seekingbested - Yes, the NMF offer applies to out-of-state students . . . but if the dates you provided are accurate, you’ve only got TWO days to pull it all together! If you want to pursue this, I’d suggest calling Bama admissions first thing in the morning to make sure you’re not too late.
The NMF award is amazingly generous, and your annual costs would be significantly less than the $25k you said your parents are prepared to pay.
Thanks for the correction @alooknac

UA Huntsville also still awards full tuition and full rides I believe. What are your stats?
That’s all true, but we’re talking about work-study wages, which is earned income, and is subject to the larger deduction amount. The lower deduction threshold is for unearned income. I would say that most students, unless they have annual earned income approaching $6,300 and/or relatively high unearned income for their age, will have no federal income tax liability.
From the IRS:
*The standard deduction for an individual who
can be claimed as a dependent on another person’s
tax return is generally limited to the
greater of:
$1,050, or
The individual’s earned income for the year
plus $350 (but not more than the regular
standard deduction amount, generally
$6,300).*
Did you call UA? You need to call them tomorrow, ASAP
I think this still can be done.
I called UA and they did not answer the phone. I even contacted the Regional Recruiter.
@seekingbested were you accepted at one of your state universities? If so, what was the cost?
Are your parents prepared to keep paying 25k per year for 4 years?
@mom2collegekids any advice on how this student gets to someone at Obama tomorrow?
I’m not sure Obama would be able to help . . . but I sent the OP a pm with info on reaching the admissions office.
I am still optimistic. However, It is disheartening that I have worked very hard to accomplish my goals in High School, only to wind up in this predicament. I appreciate your support.
@mom2collegekids I did not apply to any state schools My parents are willing to help me because they have seen me struggle through boarding school to excel which they have paid for. However, to what extent do I have to keep burdening them? They have already sacrificed a lot!
@dodgersmom Thank you for contacting the op on my behalf.
No, @seekingbested - you are the “OP” (original poster - the person who started the thread). I sent you a message with instructions on how to reach the admissions office!
And I disagree with your assessment of your situation as a “predicament” - having the opportunity to get an NMF scholarship at Bama is pretty amazing! Five years of tuition, plus all the other benefits, including study abroad . . . and your parents end up paying almost nothing!!! I think that’s about the best deal you could get anywhere.
Hi dodgersmom, I apologize for the misunderstanding. I am attempting to contact Bama for NMF scholarship. I have just applied to the university only last week. If I could get that deal, I will be grateful.
If you already applied, you’re halfway there. Call tomorrow and speak to someone in scholarships, just to confirm. If you encounter any difficulty, send me a message and I’ll see what I can do to help.
@seekingbested - I’ve just confirmed with the UA Scholarship office that the only thing you need to do to qualify for Bama’s NMF award is to submit confirmation to the NMF Scholarship program by the program’s May 1 deadline, designating UA as your first choice school. Your Bama application, test scores, etc. can be submitted later.
And it’s my understanding, although you’d want to confirm this with this with the NMF program, that if you later decide not to attend UA, you have until May 31 to change your designation of first choice school. But you should double-check this yourself before you rely on it.

From today! Update from Lacie Nolin in the UA Scholarship Office:

The only thing a student needs to do to qualify for Bama’s NMF award is to submit confirmation to the NMF Scholarship program by the program’s May 1 deadline, designating UA as the student’s first choice school. The student’s Bama application, test scores, etc. can all be submitted later.

So do this! Email a copy of your NMF certificate to Lacie Nolin or Amber Capell. Then go to NMCorp online portal for NMFs and indicate that Bama is first choice.
Then send transcripts and SAT scores (since I think you’ve already submitted application).
Then when you’re accepted, apply to the Honors College as well.
If you are eng’g or CS, make sure that is also indicated on your MyBama portal. If you need to fix that go to the Academics tab and scroll down, left column to changing major.
mom2collegekids, what is the link to submit confirmation to the NMF Scholarship program? I look it up online and could not locate it? Thanks
@seekingbested She said to “Email a copy of your NMF certificate to Lacie Nolin or Amber Capell.” I didn’t find Lacie Nolin on their website, but I did find Amber Capell:

Unfortunately there is no email address listed for her, and your only option is to use her online form, which doesn’t t allow for attachments. I find that a very irritating practice that is not helpful for students, but I guess you will have to use that and tell her that you need to email her the certificate unless someone has her email address and can PM it to you.
