College Counselor Question?

So it's been a big trend where I'm from to re-market yourself for the Ivies (or whatever your dream school is) through the use of a college counselor.

One particular kid (either the valedictorian of my class or the salutatorian) had acquired the help of a college counselor due to the parental fear that, despite getting a perfect score on his SATs and holding many leadership positions, he may end up in a similar fate as his older brother (i.e. rejected from all Ivies and MIT, only accepted to his safety, NYU).

While I myself have no plans in getting a college counselor, I am curious to know whether or not getting a counselor works. Does it help your chances because you've changed the way you've marketed yourself? Any good/bad experiences? What opinions do you have on this?

I think a good GC can be just as good.
