The school I'm looking to attend next year has an estimated college cost chart; and it has both tuition AND college/course fees? Do I pay the course fee seperately? And if so, what is it...for overload credits? Thanks in advance!

This is from my D’s winter qtr at a public university. Private schools tend to not separate fees out so much.

Student building fee
Student technology fee
Student recreation fee
Alternative transportation fee
Green Energy fee
Health Services fee.
They come to about $300 a qtr.

Course fees are different than typical university-wide fees as EK4 described.

Course fees are like “lab fees” or “art supplies fees” which are designated for particular types of classes. Certain classes will high just a lowish fee, while other classes (like science) will have higher fees for lab costs. they are used to defray lab/materials/technology use costs. Many schools charge these “course fees”. Each students course fees will be different because they’re based on the particular classes you’re taking.

Memaw, I know that you’re considering Bama and while the course fees may seem odd, when I looked into them, the ones at Bama are actually lowish. Some schools charge as much as $1000 per semester for various course fees. Bama does not charge “university fees” as EK4 describes.

No, they’re not for credit overload. And, if you have Bama’s Presidential, then it covers up to 20 credits per semester…so no likely overload cost.

Oh thanks m2ck! I was actually talking about Bama’s fees. I’m trying to figure out all the must have costs like tuition and room and board, and all the negotiable costs like the parking permit. Do you pay course fees before school, like at Bama Bound?

I should have been more specific- yes course fees are different than what I posted.
Studio classes will generally have course fees, as will lab including computer lab classes. But that is dependent on schedule & the fees I mentioned are due for every one, every term.

( Paid at same time as tuition)

If you want a really good laugh, look up UMass Amherst and their tuition and fees. The fees will make all other schools’ fees look like chump change!

Do you pay course fees before school, like at Bama Bound?

No, you pay course fees at the beginning of the semester with your other billable costs. Your course fees will be based on whatever courses you have in your schedule.
