College Courses, GPA, HS transcripts, Covid question?

With the schools being out so long, my child has wondered about taking online college courses in the subjects that they are missing out on for four months. My question is will they get credit for these courses even though they are getting credit from their high school (but what will most likely be a pass/fail grade with so much school missed)? My understanding is that college courses are weighted heavier than HS courses. I just want to make sure I understand everything before paying to enroll in a course (or two- thinking pre-calc and physics). Will he get credit for the college course (weighted) on his transcript somehow as it isn’t through the high school when applying to colleges? Does it matter that he will have taken it in HS as well as a DE course for credit? I just don’t know how taking a course outside of the high school works for putting it in the transcript for applications. I also don’t know how it will work with it being on the high school transcript as well as a college course. Any advice greatly appreciated! Trying to keep up with studies and make the best choices for use of time and money. Thank you!!!

It depends on the college he ends up going to. Some will offer credit for DE courses, and others won’t. It’ll look good on his application, but credit will depend on the institution.

I guess we are more interested in if it will count on his transcript for a grade, not credit. With schools only doing p/f for the grades, we thought a real grade would be nice but aren’t sure if it would apply towards his GPA. Rather than credit, we are looking for GPA help since this year appears to offer none.

In that case, it’ll depend on the college. GPA calculation for DE depends on each institution when the recalculate (if they do). Some schools may not count it and some may count it as an AP course.
For the GPA on his transcript, it’ll depend on your district/school.

I think you should definitely reach out to his counselor to ask. For my high school, we had to request a transcript from the college we took classes at and have it sent to our high school so that our counselors could confirm we’ve taken the courses before adding it to our transcript. These classes were weighted the same as AP classes for my school, but your son’s school may do things differently. And if they don’t appear on his high school transcript, there is always the option of requesting a transcript from the institution where he took these classes and have it sent directly to the colleges he is applying to in the future.
