College courses in Service Learning

I just happened on a college that offers Service Learning as part of some of the courses. Does anyone have any experience, or knowledge about such programs? (D would like to make a difference, and it seems like this would be a good way to incorporate service with school.)

I’m taking a course like that this year (sociology), and did last year (writing).

It is a good way to be pushed to do community service for those that want to do it, but just need some incentive.

I don’t think its a big deal. This semester I’m volunteering at an adult day center for 20 hours and will have to write a paper on the sociology behind it.

I wouldn’t base my college decision on these classes though. They’re not a big deal, and one could volunteer on their own and not end up having to write a paper on it…

mine does- and I practically changed my major. Love the prof- and the other students- ( most of them anyway) just returned from an alternative spring break doing service on Orcas Island

My son went on a study abroad program that offered this as part of the goal of exchange. Classes in the AM, volunteer work in the afternoon. It was a life changing experience for him, as well as really helping his language skills.

The University of Scranton requires it in some courses in each of the majors within the College of Professional Studies. Those majors include education, human services, OT, PT, exercise science, health administration, and human resources. It is also part of some of their SJLA (a type of honors) classes.

My daughter’s college has many courses with a service learning component. When she was applying (she’s now a junior), we were a bit skeptical, but her experience has been very positive. Her college is deeply committed to community service, so these opportunities are meaningful and well-planned, not just something thrown on paper to look good. After her first quarter as an ESL tutor, she continued tutoring on her own (i.e. without the sponsorship of the school) until this year and would still be tutoring if her schedule would have allowed. Maybe next year…
