Mu daughter (12th grade) has done a physics class at a California community college which gives her 3 units (UC transferable). She is applying to some universities outside of California and the application forms ask how many college credits she has - is unit = college credit? So 3 college credits? Thanks
You can confirm with the community college, but that sounds correct. Units and credits don’t always convert directly, but they appear to in this case. For example, my university uses the unit system where one unit = 3.5 credits.
If the California CC is on the semester system, then 1 unit should be the same as 1 credit at a college where 120-128 credits are required to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. This type of credit is sometimes called a semester hour. If the 3 unit course is transferred to a quarter system school that requires 180-192 credits to graduate, then it becomes equivalent to 4.5 quarter units, since 1 semester unit = 1.5 quarter units.
If the California CC is on the quarter system, then 1 quarter unit = 2/3 semester unit, so that a 3 unit course at the quarter system school = 2 unit course at a semester system school.
