My daughter is starting to talk about potentially doing dance team in college rather than pursuing a BA or BFA in dance. I have mixed feelings about this but she is concerned about being employable after college and thinking a more "practical" major might suit her better. She wants to dance no matter what, so she thinks dance team might be a good outlet, and she likes the idea of performing at sporting events and traveling for competitions. She is only a sophomore, so we have time, but I would love input from any parents or students who have participated in collegiate dance teams on what their experience was like.

As background, her high school has a very weak dance team (she was on the team as a freshman, but didn't want to do it again) but dances at a competitive studio with excellent jazz and ballet faculty. She is on the competition team and really enjoys it. She has been dancing for 12 years and is accomplished in ballet (including pointe), jazz and modern.

Is there a certain geographic location she is looking at? You may also be able to find YouTube videos of dance teams for the different schools that she is interested in.

If you go to the varsity website and go to competitions and then videos you can look at college teams to see their routines over the years. There should also be information on college websites. Other options could be double majoring in dance and something else more realistic, minoring in dance , or seeing if the school allows non majors to take dance classes, be in ensembles, or performances.

Thanks. We have watched many college dance team performances on YouTube. Some of them (especially U of MN) are insanely good. What we haven’t been able to determine is whether the girls on these teams are generally dance majors or whether that would be an overwhelming time commitment on top of the team practices.

On some college websites it gives a little bio about each girl on the team including their major, there might also be the coach’s email on the college website and you can probably email them and ask.

Great idea. Thank you!
