<p>Perhaps it’s a California thing. :P</p>
<p>As I mentioned earlier, there were a bunch of dances at Berkeley. One of the best known events is the Boat Dance, which takes place on a large yacht. Many students actually consider it a “second prom.” One of my friends tells me that Stanford has a similar event. When I took a quarter of classes at UC Santa Cruz last fall, I saw quite a few advertisements for dances there. I didn’t go to any of them, though, as I was too lazy to find out which were open to UC Extension students and which were not. Finally, two of my former landlady’s daughters (both of whom attend UC San Diego) often post about going to dances on Facebook.</p>
<p>On the other hand, I rarely hear out-of-state friends talk about dances and such. I guess it all depends on the local culture. Speaking of which, I’ve met people whose high school dances were all about moshing, or had no slow songs, etc. Demographics probably play a major role in the choice of music.</p>
