College decision

S got into the following colleges

1.UC IRVINE
2.BOSTON UNIVERSITY
3.IU BLOOMINGTON(not directkelley)
4.UT AUSTIN
5.EMORY UNIVERSITY

With the exception of indiana uni, he applied for a sociology major (although he WANTS to do business)
What college should should he go to?

All have net prices that are affordable without loans more than the federal direct loans?

@ucbalumnus Cost is not a factor

For a business major, I think either UT or Emory is fine, although Kelly Business School ( IU suffers from reputation and therefore …) is also solid.

Texas would be my choice because of its blend of good academics, sports, school spirit and social networking opportunities needed to excel in business.

If you’re going to pay full costs, choose Emory. The business school is highly reputable and for costs that aren’t that different he’ll have better learning comfort, support, resources, etc. UTOos is private school costs, public school class size and resources.

Before making any decision I’d explore how easy or difficult it would be transfer into the b-school at each option. If he is sure that he wants business that is an important factor. You can have him even try to contact schools to see if his admission can be flipped into the b-school now. Assuming he can get into all b-schools, I’d opt for Emory for the reasons stated above.

UCI’s b-school is very hard to get into as an internal transfer although the biz econ program basically accepts any student in good standing. I don’t know about the ease of internally transferring to UT’s or BU’s program.

Emory makes it relatively simple for students to get into the bschool. Take the business prereqs, do well in them, volunteer, and participate in one leadership role and you’re in. Emory’s class sizes are also much smaller, the students uniformly strong, and the business school well respected. Its social sciences are also excellent.

Thank you for your responses!!!

Go to Emory. At UT Austin Im assuming your not into McCombs, and transferring in is almost impossible. Emory has a very good business program.

Did she just apply to sociology just to be accepted to those schools?

@SternBusiness
His counsellor told him to do it so as to get in…

Regarding Emory-
S put sociology as first choice and business as second choice (What programs at emory university interest you?). Also he has a LOR from his business studies teacher.
Any comments on that ? How can he get into goizueta?

^^^I’d suggest you have your S talk to Emory directly about this. Perhaps start by calling his admissions counselor.

All students at Emory start out in either Oxford College or Emory College. Then after 1.5 to 2 years of coursework some students move on to the nursing school, the Goizueta Business school, or just remain in Emory College. It’s not necessary to declare a business major as a freshman at Emory because the school knows that the vast majority of students will change at some point. Take the necessary classes, do well in them, and have some leadership experience. That’s it.

[Here’s an overview of the prebusiness courses he will need to take.

To see the actual application document that current Emory students who apply to Goizueta fill out, click here](Matriculation | Undergraduate Business Degree (BBA) | Emory University Goizueta Business School), go to the current header, go to the application process and click on the application form. You’ll see EXACTLY what Goizueta considers when deciding who to admit. The form may seem daunting but given two years and the wealth of opportunities Emory offers, your son should have little trouble with the non academic parts of the application.
