College Decision

I’m having trouble deciding between UGA and Georgia Tech. I am going into my senior year in high school taking college level courses. I plan on majoring in Computer Science (C.S.). From what i understand, Georgia Tech offers a better education and looks better on your resume, especially in CS, but it is extremely hard to keep HOPE and Zell. I have also heard that it offers a lot less in the social scene. I have been to some parties there which were very fun, but still.

UGA would be potentially easier, have more people to make friends with, but would not look as good as GT to employers in the IT/software dev. world.

What do you all think about this? Thanks to all answers in advance!

My info:
-1310 SAT
-27 ACT

  • 3.85 GPA unweighted
    -4.31 GPA weighted

You are getting ahead of yourself. Applications haven’t opened for either UGA or GT. I would wait and make that decision after college acceptances as you may or may not get in. The competition goes up each year. I disagree with the notion of more people to make friends with at UGA. GT expects alot of its students so you do have to study but I would imagine a CS degree anywhere requires hard work. Yes a number of students lose hope at GT. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. GT is really a stem school so if you choose not to study cs after matriculating you have few options outside of engineering and science. If you were accepted to both choose the one you would be happiest at irrespective of status.

How are you calculating your GPA, is a 90 an A and is this for all four years?

It might be better to wait until you have acceptances and then ask for feedback about your choices. Are you planning to take the ACT or SAT again?

The GPA I put was straight from my Junior year transcript

I might take the SAT again because I had an easier time in it. Maybe I can boost up my scores a little bit.

@cgreer730 What is your math ACT and SAT score? Have you taken or will take AB Calculus or BC Calculus in high school? Your math scores need to be high to be successful at Gatech and to get in at all. The computer science program at GaTech is very mathematical, but you can study computer media at GaTech instead of computer science if you don’t want a very mathematical major. You will need to pass Calculus 1, 2, 3 and a year of linear algebra to get a CS degree at GaTech. Some students take probability and stats, and discrete math as well to get a GaTech degree.

Do you want to take that much mathematics?
