College deferring for gap year(s) enquiry

Hey everyone,

I’m a rising junior in high school and have been researching about gap years and stuff.
I was wondering about how college admissions would work out for this. After doing some research, I have come to the conclusion that it is better to apply to college before taking a gap year and get in, then tell them that I would like to defer?

I’m not really sure how that works.

Also, adding to that, I was wondering if I took two gap years instead of one. If I were to apply to college when I’m in high school, would they allow me to defer TWO years?

I would just like to know the glimpse of this process and if possible, how two gap years would work out.

Thanks!

Almost every college/university will allow you to defer for one year. Many will allow deferrals for up to two years (most often that request is for international students who are fulfilling military obligations). But if that is your plan now, ask the places that are on your list about their specific policies so you can eliminate any from your list that won’t be able to meet your needs.

The California UC’s and Cal states do not allow you defer except for Military service.
