Because my son is a musician, we had no problem choosing the "right" college for him -- had to be great in jazz/guitar, etc. No problem. But now we have the girl graduating next year! lol
It has been.... more than difficult. So I am appealing to you knowledgeable folks here at CC who were such a tremendous help with our son!
D is mostly interested in Creative Writing for Children. We've looked at most of the posts on here and found quite a few but many of them of course are in NY or Mass. We live in GA right now, but will probably locate to KY or Tx or TN next year. So no Georgia schools (we hate it here!!). She doesn't mind going far off, but some of those NY or Mass schools seem very liberal.
Now here's the tricky part. I also don't really want her to go to a Christian college either --- at least not if that college has curfews and other strict "legalistic" rules. I went to a Baptist college that had curfews for girls but none for boys, did not allow dancing on campus, etc yet the ministerial students used profanity and drugs right outside their classroom. She wants to be in a safe, mostly conservative place but not a hypocritical prison.
Are we asking too much? Can anyone recommend a somewhat conservative "feel" that has a good writing dept.? Or at least provide some guidance for colleges which at least won't be hugely liberal? Kind of middle of the road?

This might be better posted in the “College Search and Selection” forum :)

Sorry — I forgot the little detail that would make this make sense! lol — I have homeschooled both of them for their entire school career. Thus, I was hoping the homeschooling community might have a better idea of a good “fit” for my D.
I didn’t want it in the college selection necessarily, though, I guess I could post there as well… mainly I didn’t want to because it seems most of the suggestions there tend to be for more liberal colleges and colleges in the Northeast or California. Also, I don’t think most public school parents or kids quite understand the motivations of home schoolers. My daughter’s main “fear” (though she isn’t scared, so fear is somewhat of a misnomer) is that the other students will be very liberal. She just wants a place where she isn’t constantly bombarded with that.

What’s your income level? Will she be applying for f. aid? What can you afford?

I just did a search on College Board Big Future with the major of “creative writing” and came up with 68 schools including Berea in Kentucky, which is a fabulous (but Christian) school for lower income families.

Hillsdale is a conservative non-Christian college. I don’t know if they have creative writing but it’s a great school.

Try the search on “Big Future” and see what you come up with.

Large flagship schools have so many students that there will be liberal, conservative and pretty much every political and religious orientation on campus. For example, while Austin is typically considered the most liberal city in Texas, it still has a very active conservative side, as far as both political and religious organizations go.

With your family coming to Texas, Texas A&M is one of the most conservative schools in the state. Baylor is also pretty conservative, although religious, which you don’t want. (Although Baylor is not at all like your experience at a Christian college in the past.).

West Texas tends to be quite socially conservative, so colleges in places like San Angelo, Abilene, Midland/Odessa etc will generally have a more overall conservative atmosphere, just by virtue of their location.

Check out Kenyon in Ohio. Very challenging school - small Liberal Arts college known for it’s writing/literature. Absolutely beautiful campus. One of the top Liberal Arts colleges in the country and the first private college in Ohio.

I agree with checking out Kenyon. We’ve homeschooled since day 1 & have 2 graduating this year (remember me from the music major thread, lol).

We are also are looking for schools that are not screamingly liberal/anti-christian OR very legalistic/Christian. We really liked Kenyon when we visited & the writing dept. has a great reputation (plus some great scholarship possibilities). One of my daughters wants to major in creative writing (both are applying there).

I would suggest Goucher, Guilford and UNC-Asheville (and the colleges that change lives website) all very insulated good feel…remember that writing will also come from a MFA…My son is at Kenyon, it is a fabulous, fabulous school for writing and he is VERY happy there…she would do well to check out living on the wellness floor or dorm at any school.
