College definitely isn't easier than high school for me, yet I keep hearing some other people say that it is SO easy, especially people from affluent, high performing schools. What do you think?

hell no it isnt easier. at least not for me. ppl who say its SO easy are prob in their freshman or maybe even early sophomore year. i can kinda see why ppl would say that early on in college i suppose. it really depends on a lot of things, like profs, and classes and scheduals etc. but in general i dont think its easier at all.

It really depends on a few things:

Which college

What major

What classes you are taking

Okay, I could easily be a...sociology major, take ~13 units in 3 classes that require little work (3 papers for the entire semester, for example) and meet about 13 hours per week...

Or I could be an...engineering major, take ~18 units in 5 classes that meet about 25 hours per week with long assignments due every week and labs up the wazoo.

But I think for most people, college is more challenging than high school. You generally have fewer hours of class so there's more free time, and some classes don't really have homework (just readings/papers), but the material is definitely more challenging.

Yes its easier.

if you go to a crappy college, it definately has the potential to be easier. i would say for the majority of people on CC who are going to very good schools, its not. I also don't buy the argument that "high school was hard." I did nothing in high school - and my parents paid about 15 grand a year for me to go there.

Maybe if you went to a really rigorous high school, and then you went to community college afterwards, it would be easier. I never really did much work in high school...I did about 80% of my homework in one of my other classes or at lunch and if I ever studied for something, it was for half an hour or less. College is definitely not like that.

H.S I was not able to pick my teachers. Teachers are the ones who make the classes easier or hard.

If you enjoy the class or major then it shouldn't be so hard. Unless you have bad teachers.

I don't find it easier at all. There is much more work and my professors expect a lot more out of our papers/tests/etc.

Enjoyment and good teachers don't make classes easy (especially compared to HS material), though they may motivate you to work harder. I found college to be both more enjoyable and way harder than high school.

As vissicitudes mentions, it really depends on the college/program/classes you pick (and high school you went to), but if you find college less challenging than HS, then you are wasting your money (and you probably wasted a lot of effort in high school).

I took a course in high school, linear algebra, and then retook it in college. The college course was a walk in the park compared to my high school course. I thought I might have just gotten a lot better at math over time, but I looked at the work for my high school linear algebra course. Nope. It was definitely a lot harder.

Overall, I've found my top-20 college to be at about the same level as my high school background in humanities and a lot easier in math and science.

I'm just glad I'm not paying.

It really depends on your major, school, student body, etc.

For instance at my high school I cruised through, but in college there are kids in my classes who study at the library for (not joking) 10 hours a day. Needless to say this makes the curves pretty bad in some classes.

Not to be racist or anything but it normally happens in those math/science classes with a bunch of asian or indian kids. I'm asian so don't think I'm saying anything wrong..just my experiences.

I am telling you all. The teacher makes all the world of a difference. It doesn't matter what class you are taking if you have nice laid back teacher that class will be easy. If you have a mean hardcore teacher prepare to do TONS of work.

people who find college harder are usually poor smelly kids from public schools

its different from person to person, college to college, and high school to high school. If you find urself really good at taking exams and writing papers but horrible at day to day homework, then yes college will be better (not necessarily easier though). If you went to a really competitive magnet school and attend a very mediocre state college, then college may be easier for you. but there are too many variables to generalize whether college is easier or harder than high school. Most people find it harder, but there are some who find it easier.
