I wanted to get y’all’s opinion on using humor in writing my college essays. I have heard varying opinions on the matter and frankly I consider myself funny on some occasions. Should I use humor in my essays, and if yes, how should I utilize it?

One person’s funny can provoke another’s eyeroll, Just steer clear of anything remotely offensive and be as genuine as possible…You may consider yourself “funny on some occasions,” but you need to make sure others do too. Run in by some adults for feedback.

Humor, if done well, makes an essay really stand out as memorable. I’d recommend avoiding less mature or crass humor and definitely run it by a variety of folks (old, young, college educated, conservative, liberal) to make sure the humor transfers.
I’ve heard some of the “favorite” essays from adcoms at Stanford and quite a few involve humorous stories.
