College Essay: Overcoming Adversity/Abuse

For my college essay, I am interested in writing about how I survived my past.

For much of my life, and well into high school, I was a victim of abuse and neglect. I hit rock bottom within a haze of self-hatred and self-harm, and I almost completely let go. I then went to a hospital for in-patient treatment and transformed myself and my view of life. I have now reacted an equilibrium in my life and operate an inspiration and advice blog, where I help other people going through similar life crises.

Overall, I'd like my essay to be a story of overcoming life's unjust obstacles and reaching a better self.

However, I do not know how to display my story, or which parts to exempt or dumb-down. I don't want the essay to focus on my downfall as much as my mental reincarnation, but other than that, I'm drawing a blank.

Applying to competitive schools.

And help would be appreciated :) thank you very much.

wow same problem, expect you’ve been through much worse than me, and i didn’t start a blog and do the awesome things you did.

but i mean with how or if i should tell colleges. i think as long as you focus on how you’re better and were strong enough to work through your problems and how you’re now helping others.

but at the same time, colleges are highly risk adverse, so maybe exempt the self harm. and after what you’ve been through, i think anyone would understand why you had these issues.
