College Essay topic

I don’t know what to write about for my college essay. I have 2 ideas of what I should do but don’t really know which one to do.

App got rejected from app store

  • worked all day and night on it
  • thought it was going to be innovative and awesome
  • they said the app didn’t not live up to the standards of the app store
  • felt defeated and started doubting self
  • learned that I must up the quality of my work
  • next app was first to get into app store (not the best or coolest app but still) took like 2 weeks to tweak

Digital Electronics class

  • 24 on first test, felt like dropping the class
  • 56 first quarter
  • increased every quarter
  • got 94 in 4th quarter
  • 77 final average
  • was harder than the AP classes I took in the sense that it was like a college class (my teacher didn’t do any reviews or anything, just talked about a new subject everyday and and wrote whatever we thought was necessary)
  • first class like that ever
  • learned more about life in general than actual engineering (awesome teacher)

Either could work or be awful. I think you should try writing about both and see what ends up making the more engaging essay. Remember that you want the addmissions committee to like you. They want to see you as someone who would be an engaging classmate, a fun roommate, an interesting person to talk to in the dining hall. How you write about your experiences is more important than what your write about. Show don’t tell. Let your personality come through. My kids both tried essays that seemed like they should work, but just fell flat. Other topics just ended up being more fun to write about.

I agree with math mom! (almost) any topic can work as long as you are passionate about it. Over the summer I started working on my Common app essay and I got so wrapped up in trying to think of an “innovative” essay that nobody had ever seen before that none of my essays really sounded like me. So I accepted the fact that AOs have read thousands of essays, and my best bet was to write about a topic that excited me. Think about what makes you mad, excited, or hopeful and write an essay about that. Don’t worry about sounding like the perfect candidate (it doesn’t exist!), just focus on writing an essay that is unique to YOU. Good luck!
