How important to have perfect grammar and spellings
on college essays?
If I make several grammatical mistakes on the essays,
will the colleges reject me right away?

Did you already submit your essay? Are you a senior?

Yes, by my understanding, grammar is important! One or two mistakes is okay. Anything else is very risky.

It depends on the school. Some schools weight the essays very heavily, and others only really consider them if you're a borderline candidate.

If you already submitted them and found mistakes afterwards, we'd probably have a better idea if you mentioned what schools you sent them to.

You can't afford any mistake on your application at HYPS etc. The competition is so intense that a tiny grammar mistake may give the adcom a negative impression about you and your ability to write. I'm not saying that colleges will reject you outright but it certainly doesn't look good. If you are applying for colleges outside the top 10-20 league, then you should not be too worried. You will be given more leniency if you are an international, especially at some LACs.
