College essay?

for those of you who are applying to the IVIES via regular or early decision, when did you or will you start your college essay?
Please mention if you are applying early or regular decision.
I HAVE NO IDEA IF I SHOULD START MY ESSAY IN MID AUGUST IF I'M APPLYING REGULAR DECISION.
thank you!!

Start it as early as possible so you have plenty of time to revise and get opinions. But clearly there is no “rule” that you can only start your essay after August—start writing whenever you feel is best.

lollll just start when you feel like it. I started a few days ago as soon as I came up with a good idea at like 1:30 a.m. I literally wrote like half of my essay by 2 am that night and so far so good.

I’ll probably be applying Early Decision somewhere but I don’t know yet. I started my essay in late July. I think I’ve just about finished it, which is an enormous relief.

I recommend you start now, even if you are applying regular decision. The more time you have the better.

I applied RD to all my schools. I started thinking about my essays in mid-October and didn’t actually write a word till mid-December. I didn’t leave time to do a million edits, but that’s just my style. I feel like anything pasts one or two edits and my voice begins to get lost in the mix… Once I had thought through exactly what I was going to write about, I just sat down and typed up a bunch of essays in a couple of days. I let them sit for a bit, then did a couple of edits for grammar / spelling. I even decided to write a couple of supplemental essays in the day or two leading up to the deadline.

Don’t feel pressured to start writing essay in August, but if you’re style is to start early and get them done way before the deadline, more power to you.
