College Essays and Early Beginnings

Hi. I'm a sophemore in highschool, and I want to start getting ready a bit early on my essay. When I asked, a lot of people told me that I should take the topic from something that's happened to me in life. But my life's been pretty uninteresting so far, nothing dramatic has happened to me because I've been pretty shielded growing up. Any advice? Also, how long should a college essay be?

Don't worry about being dramatic; the mundane can make a good essay, too. One kid I know who got into the Ivies wrote about her childhood obsession with frogs. Remember the purpose of the essay - to show the school something about you that they otherwise would not know by reading the application.

Your long essay should be around 500 words, and the short essay about 150.

Don't start too early, though; you'll change between now and senior year, and you don't want to get burned out before you actually write them!

mochakoi I have the exact same problem! Im a sophomore too. everybook I read talks about drawing from your own personal experiences and gives examples of students overcoming the death of a parent, etc. I have had a really sheltered and fortunate life and I don't really have anything interesting to write about. Hopefully I'll find something!

a bit? how about a year early
