College Essays: Idealism vs Reality?

So Im typing up my college essays and one of the topics asks what I do for fun.

Now at first I put down playing video games because....video games and stuff.

However when I had it edited the editor said that I should do something else as video games for fun does not bode well for college and that I should either connect video games to how I became a better person or find a new topic.

Any advice for college people? Or anyone with actual experience/knowledge?

I think the most important thing is to be honest on your applications. If you don’t read great works of literature for fun, an essay on that topic will seem disingenuous. With that said, video games are a bit of a leisure activity. Is there anything about video games you can connect to something that may seem more meaningful? Is it how you relax, how you connect with friends? Why does it matter to you? If you can make it not as much about video games but what video games mean to you, than I think you’d be okay. If you like playing video games because shooting things is fun, than perhaps pick a different subject. You want to put your best foot forwards. If there’s another activity you enjoy, maybe think about doing that instead.

bump!

Seriously if there are 50+ views on it at least more than one of you should be able to give an opinion on this!

There are going to be thousands of applicants who write the same thing because video games are popular, so it’s not like you aren’t at a disadvantage to them, you’re just one of the crowd.

Now, if you happened to spin it into something like playing video games with your friends because you like the teamwork aspect and hanging out and joking around, that’s certainly more acceptable than saying you sit alone in your Mom’s basement, playing all night, and never coming out except to go to the bathroom or eat.
