College Essays...Pulling the sympathy card

So I have been thinking, we have all had tremendous suffering at one point or another in our lives (a loved one passing away, cancer, AIDs, a car crash, parent losing a job, so on). Do you think it is fair to bring up the "sympathy card" in an college essay (for ex. i have a debilitating disease, is it fair to bring it up and talk about how i overcame it and how it has made me stronger?)

Discuss :)

Admissions readers are experienced enough to see through the use of “the sympathy” simply in hope to gain admissions. If your disease did seriously have a profound affect on you, making you stronger/better because of it, then write about this experience. Be beautifully honest and truthful, those are usually the best admission essays.

Hope this helps. Good luck! :)
