how long did it take for you to write your essay? I mean I thought I could finish it in a day, but there are people here who have already started  and even sent their applications in

well, i do have to tell you that strong && well-developed college essays do not take a "DAY"

I started working on my essay since May to present, August [I still remember the day where I told myself I need to start working on this S***]
It took so long because its like everyday I had a new idea. Whether its the introduction, the topic, or the conclusion. I always had something in my mind that will tweak the essay. The next is that when I read it over, there will always be grammatical errors. I'm not Hemingway Junior so my essay wasn't flawless. Then there are some things that just didn't sound right. It will either sound boring, non-sensical, or just plain irrelevent to my passion. Now I have to write another essay for Amherst college because they require a supplement. Meaning, I have to start on another brand new topic which kills me.

So yeah, that is basically what my essay process was all about. && up till today I'm still editing and trying to prefect; needless to say that I'm still going to hand it over to my English teacher before submitting it but I think you got the gist of it

see I have the ideas, and I have the intro - all in my head...

I know how I will start it and how I will end it, of course I am going to send it to my English teacher before I submit it.

Don't worry about the people writing theirs and sending them in already. That's a stupid idea anyway, get all your friends and English Teacher(s) to read it when you go back to school. You may even change your mind about what essay you want to write, so it's good to wait a while before finally putting your application together. As long as you have time before the deadline and there are no merit scholarships involved, there's no need to rush the application.

oh okay... I guess that lessens the stress

yeah, I forgot to add that also chris07.
But then again you may want to rethink sending it to friends. Especially the ones that are applying to the same college as you.
Send it to the ones you really really trust and also send it probably to those who are not applying yet. More like the ones that are still juniors or sophomores.

Bottom Line:: Send it to people you trust that are not going to bite of your essay

Oh yeah speaking of idea, If you have lets say three ideas. Please by all means pick the most unique and breath-taking one.

I was going to just give it to my teachers - who are very well versed in what makes a good essay, since they have checked the essays of people who have gotten into the tougher ivy leagues (Princeton, Harvard, Yale)...

I thought about it for maybe a month... occasionally. then I wrote it pretty much the week before the deadline.

I wrote mine the day before...lol

krnpsy, && did you get in?

I got into Ithaca, Emerson

rejected from NYU and BU

Yes I only applied to four schools. and I also wrote my script for the creative submission portion the day before too. I know...I got lucky. LOL.

Still definitely don't do what I did. Doing things last minute gave me a lot of stress. And if I did this well with just one day, imagine what I could of done with two days.

With essays CREATIVITY is key. No one wants to read a boring essay. Experiment with different concepts and ideas.

Wow, I hope you can trust your friends not to steal out of your essays.

And that's another point about college applications, not exactly related to essays. If you and your friends are applying to some of the same places, that should be something to be excited about. If the best happens, you'll be college classmates too. Don't think "They're Competition!", and definitely don't assume that's what they're thinking. If it is some place competitive, be mature and accept that you or your friend might not get in. Neither of you should feel bad if one of you chooses it in the end.
