Just wondering if any current college students had any recommendations for college essentials, specifically for dorm, clothing, or anything else. Thanks a lot!

there is a huge sticky at the top of the College life forum for this, go read :)

Things you should bring but many people forget:
batteries
duct tape
light bulbs
extension cords

And, obviously, clothes, towels, sheets, and other things to take care of yourself. Everyone’s college packing list is different, depending on what they think they need.

extra surge protector.
Small bottle of super glue
External hard drive
Computer mouse

^^^Stuff lots of people forgot on my floor

Medicine, like Ny/DayQuil and Advil. Trust me, you will need them.

Oh and Band-Aids.

I needed a sewing kit and band aids and didn’t have either.

Definitely things to bring.

You can take the minimum necessity things at the beginning. As you’ll stay in the hostel, you’ll come across the daily requirements one by one. Even if you make a list and take things still you’ll forget one or the other. So it’s better to take the bare minimum things first.

Hot glue gun. I’d put it up there with duct tape for a million and 1 uses.

First aid kit. If you’re planning on biking make it a decent one. If you’re planning on skateboarding, buy the best one you can find. I wiped out on my scooter freshman year and let me tell you, you curse yourself when you’re dripping blood and have no first aid kit.

2 power strips with 6’ or longer cords. IMO surge protection is pretty stupid unless you live where it lightning’s alot.

Flash drive. 2 GB at least.

Screwdriver set. Make sure it can handle small/big screws.

Those are all the ones I can think of that are useful and not common sense to bring.

A kit of over the counter meds in case you come down with something and momma is not there to help you right away. Cough syrup, cold medicine, pain reliever as well as first aid. Toiletries, waterproof boots to get to campus, extension cords. There are lots of packing check lists on line though. Good luck!

If the door automatically closes (which is common in newer dorms), bring a door stop.

A folding chair to encourage people to come in and visit.

A sleeping bag in case you visit someone else or get sexiled from your room.

My son’s college prohibits extension cords and requires that power strips include surge protectors. I thought that was to protect your own electronics, but they said it is so your electrical problems don’t cause problems for other students.

A rice cooker?

I can’t think of how a surge protector would prevent problems for other students. And here’s a tip…do what you want. They aren’t going to be inspecting your son’s room anyways so they won’t know whether you use an extension cord or not.

If one wear a lot of nicer clothes, instead of an iron and board, a clothes steamer can be an essential.

A lighter and a bottle opener

See now these are the things you would Deff forget,

Ash trays…
