I would like to find out if anyone's kid has done a semester at another school. D2 is looking at study abroad, just like her older sister and many other college students. I am not sure if she would get that much out of study abroad. She lived in a Spanish speaking country the last 2 years of high school, so she is fluent in Spanish. She has traveled extensively in Europe and Asia. I am not sure how much she could get out of spending a semester at a foreign country.

I am wondering if she would get more out of going to another college in the US for a semester. She is currently going to a large uni in the NE. Would she enjoy a semester at a LAC in CA, down South or Midwest. This is a big country, maybe she'll get more by living/studying at another part of US. On the other hand, it could be a waste of time.

I am also wondering if every school has such a program and which school has a better program.

I think being an exchange student at another college is a great idea. Warning: If your student likes it too much, she might transfer into the exchange-hosting school. Women’s colleges tend to have exchange programs. Not a waste.

Thanks for your input. D2 grew up in the NE, other than her 2 years living outside of US. I think she will end up working/living in NYC some day, so maybe she would enjoy living some where else for few months.

I don’t have kids who have done this, but as a college prof I have students who have participated in the program. All have been very happy…especially the one who just returned from a semester in Hawaii…

Also, being on exchange and living in a dorm is sometimes the best/only way to “afford” a stay in these attractive cities/areas (SF, DC). Also, even if a school doesn’t have a formal exchange program, she can check to see if the targeted school would be willing to accept her as a temp student through a consortium agreement (helps aid transfer) - kind of like a professional courtesy. In some cases, a student would have to show that the targeted school has an offering (special course/program) that she couldn’t get at her current univ.

I did this when I was in college some years ago; I went from a small commuter college in Michigan to University of Montana. It was a GREAT experience and one of my best memories about my college days.

She’s at Cornell, right? Could she satisfy her urge to be elsewhere for a while by doing the Cornell in Washington program or the Urban Semester program?
