College Experience at RU: Different?

I've heard some opinionate that schools like Rutgers won't give you the college experience that you might be looking for because of the lack of diversity. I hear a few kids mumble in my school that they hope that Rutgers won't be like "high school all over again." Rutgers is a legit choice on my list, and I'm honestly looking foward to college. But, I wanted to hear other people's opinions about Rutgers being a state school and being filled with kids that are "all the same" versus private schools filled with geographically diverse people.

I went to Rutgers for my Katrina semester and then afterwards went back to Tulane, a private school with a lot of geographically diverse people as you put it. In any case, not at any point did I feel like Rutgers was just high school again. There are just SO MANY people there that you could possibly not see a lot of high school people ever. I saw a couple here and there, but these were people I actually liked. Otherwise, most of the people I met were new. The one good thing about everyone being from in-state is that you have at least that in common. Getting started talking is easy.

Now going to Tulane with a lot of different people is a lot different, but not necessarily better. My friends here consist of people from Equador, Mexico, Wyoming, NJ, Cali, and Louisiana mostly, while my friends at Rutgers were from Newark, bergen county, Millstone, and other more local places. It does open up different types of people that you might not meet at Rutgers, but you never know.

the few kids mumbling may be right to a certain degree, but keep in mind that rutgers is huge, so its really what you make of it.

Rutgers is very diverse. Very prominent religious and ethnic clubs at RU. I have met people from Australia, South Korea, Trinidad, Slovakia, South Africa, Russia and much more. I'm from South Jersey and you would be amazed at the differences between just north and south Jersey. Prominent gay community too. I wouldn't compare Rutgers to where I went to high school at all. If you don't consider it a college experience you must be hiding in the shadows. You need to come into college with a clean slate. High school ideology needs to be put into a safe and the key thrown away. You are going to find H.S. drama at any college or university you attend.

2005-2006 rutgers: FROM FASTWEB (most schools are 70-80% caucasian, so this is really diverse)

Campus Life

If you're concerned that Rutgers will be like high school in that you'll see a lot of people from your high school or that a lot of people will already know each other from high school, I'd say that neither's really a problem. Rutgers is a huge school with a lot of people, and you just have to take advantage of the different types of people you meet. Yes, most of the kids you meet are from Jersey, but they've had different experiences and are from different areas of the state.
