Absolutely

Absolutely. Because I always feel good when we win!

No, we are a fair team and we play by the rules.

Love the rivalries, dislike the BCS regime.

Uhh, I dont kmow what it was like when we werent a success.

Absolutely.

Yes, their own dorm section and cafeteria.

Yes. Yes, they want our money.

We are well respected and feared as a football team.

Chris Kieser- Boston College
not a football player and we dont have frats

1.Do you think schools are heavily invested in the team’s success economically or emotionally? - yes, its a big part of how the school makes money- getting to a BCS bowl would mean about $14 million dollars for our school, which is a big deal with a relatively small endowment for a top school,

2.After a big win, do you feel especially prideful? Why?- of course, i love seeing my school in the national spotlight and sports are the easiest way to provide this. nothing is better than watching your school on highlights on college gameday

3.Does your school’s athletic department carry a “win-at-all-cost” mentality? If so, explain why?- i dont think we have a win at all costs mentality compared to other D1 schools. of course we want to win, but i think graduating players is very important to the coaches and administrators here (we have the 4th highest grad rate in all of D1, including the ivies, at 95%)

What is your biggest thing you love or hate about college football?- love- that every game counts every week and you cant take a week off or you may get upset and ruin your season. i also love the intensity of the rivalries, they cant be beat, this is why college is better than the pro game. hate- early season non conference cupcake schedules, unbalanced schedules in conference play, sometimes the BCS but most of the time i dont mind it, and also that there are too many bowl games

5.How has the presence of a success football team altered the overall campus environment of your school and your college experience?- football is very big here, the college experience here is based around athletics, especially football. when the team wins, its a much better weekend overall than when we lose. we also have a lot of school pride generated by the success of the team

6.Does college football promote partying?- id say it does, but college kids dont need an excuse to party

7.Are the athletes given special treatment at your school? If yes, why?- they are given special treatment in admissions, obviously, but i dont think they are once they get here, at least not as much as some other programs. most just major in the easier subjects and coast through with not so great GPAs. the fact is that even if you wanted a high GPA, it is extremely hard with the amount of practice time you have to put in, so it would take a very talented person.

8.Do you think that major corporations are a big part of college football? If yes, do you think they are trying to exploit colleges fans and play a too big of a role?- in the traditional stadiums, notre dame for example, there is barely any corporate influence, but overall it is taking over (louisville named their stadium after papa john's pizza). all the bowls are named after major corporations, which annoys me, i cant get used to saying the fedex orange bowl or the gaylord hotels music city bowl, i think it takes away from tradition

How has the football team's success altered the reputation of your school if at all?- definitely, more people know about BC because of our football program, and athletics in general. i think it helps less people confuse it with BU, but academically a lot of people still dont know that we are ranked 34th in US News, we are known more nationwide for our athletics

Full Name: Greg Doe
School: Tulane University
If you are a football player/ frat or sorority member please mention that: I am a walk-on football player.

1.Do you think schools are heavily invested in the team’s success economically or emotionally?

Emotionally yes, we just went through a hurricane and had a really rough season last year (and this year). Ton of injuries to the team this year and it seems that a lot of the alumni in the area have a lot of faith in us still. The SuperDome never gets filled up, but there's enough people there that we know we have a lot of emotional support.

2.After a big win, do you feel especially prideful? Why?

Ha! Wouldn't know! Yes, every win is prideful.

3.Does your school’s athletic department carry a “win-at-all-cost” mentality? If so, explain why?

No.

4. What is your biggest thing you love or hate about college football?

I don't think there is one thing I dislike. I have team camaraderie (even though I didn't play this year and took a medical redshirt - I will be starting next year, though), I love that there's 90 other guys that I know I can always count on, I love that everyone in this school knows who I am.

5.How has the presence of a success football team altered the overall campus environment of your school and your college experience?

It IS my college experience.

6.Does college football promote partying?

Sure, but Tulane is a huge party school anyway. We win, everyone drinks; we lose, everyone drinks. I don't think the team makes a difference.

7.Are the athletes given special treatment at your school? If yes, why?

None at all.

8.Do you think that major corporations are a big part of college football? If yes, do you think they are trying to exploit colleges fans and play a too big of a role?

Of course, college football brings lots of revenue back to the school if the team is successful (unlike Rice :)).

9. How has the football team's success altered the reputation of your school if at all?

People know me. I'm a pretty big deal.

Full Name: Sean Miller
School: Georgia Tech
If you are a football player/ frat : Fraternity member

1.Both and to great extent. If we make the Orange bowl, that means lots of $$ more the school...also people like me choose schools on D1 sports.
2.Of course, because I go to a school that's ranked better then alot of teams in the nation..wins just solidify this.
3.I dont really think so
4. Love- gameday atmosphere, tailgaiting, road trips
Hate- money spent tailgaiting and taking away game road trips
5.Makes things more exciting, people look forward to the weekend games
6.Oh yea, but we'd party anyway...just not as hard
7.Yea, we get to eat in a special dining hall that other kids cant...football team gets money to play...special dorms/apts
8.I mean they put their names on our shirts and all over the stadium but it doesnt really play a huge role from a fan's standpoint
9. People know us more for athletics...not just as an engineering school. they know that reggie ball sucks and the only reason we win is because calvin johnson has great hands :)

School:

Three....

University of Pittsburgh (alum.)
University of North Carolina (soon to be alum., though they suck this year...)
University of Wisconsin (current student)

If you are a football player/ frat or sorority member please mention that:

hahaha....nope...

1.Do you think schools are heavily invested in the team’s success economically or emotionally?

Definately. A crowd can make or break a game, I've seen it happen dozens of times.

2.After a big win, do you feel especially prideful? Why?

Yes. I'm very proud of my team when they win a game because of all of the hard work they put in besides their school work (or at least I hope they concentrate on their school work as well...).

3.Does your school’s athletic department carry a “win-at-all-cost” mentality? If so, explain why?

I really don't think so.

What is your biggest thing you love or hate about college football?

I hate guys with heads bigger than their brains. The ones whose testosterone levels are through the roof.

I love the culture around football though. Going to a stadium on a cold Saturday afternoon with a big blanket to cheer on your team to victory (making me sad I don't have season tickets this year).

5.How has the presence of a success football team altered the overall campus environment of your school and your college experience?

The success of the football teams in my experience hasn't changed the environment of my school or college experience as much as the success of the basketball teams.

6.Does college football promote partying?

Of course there is always tailgating. It also increases the amount of people at the bar. However, not sure what it does to the under-age population, (not sure if there is an increase of parties per se) as I wasn't a fan until I was of legal age.

7.Are the athletes given special treatment at your school? If yes, why?

I never give them special treatment. When I was a senior at Pitt, Larry Fitzgerald would always park illegally near my apartment. I always snickered at him parking there, but was delighted to see the police would give him a parking ticket just as easily as they gave them to me ;).

8.Do you think that major corporations are a big part of college football? If yes, do you think they are trying to exploit colleges fans and play a too big of a role?

Yes, yes, and yes. I hate the trend of bowl sponsorships. Each year it seems there is a bowl with a different name and I feel it takes away from the traditional feel of the end of the football season.

How has the football team's success altered the reputation of your school if at all?

Yes. Especially when Pitt made the Fiesta bowl a few years back. I feel since we got into the bowl on a fluke, it put a scarlet letter on our program when we were delivered a humiliating loss.

It's much easier to lose the reputation when you already have it to get it in the first place. Look at Rutgers and the disrespect they have been handed this year.

1.Do you think schools are heavily invested in the team’s success economically or emotionally? Of course. UT takes so much pride in it's athletic teams. When we win it's amazing and everyone is in a good mood. When we lose, everyone is bummed out. UT is a big sports school, everywhere you look there are athletic facilities.

2.After a big win, do you feel especially prideful? Why? Definately. I take pride in my school and when we win it's an amazing feeling. I suppose being a student you feel very connected with your school and when something good happens, such as a win, you feel good.

3.Does your school’s athletic department carry a “win-at-all-cost” mentality? If so, explain why? I'm not really sure. I mean, they probably do, all schools want to win. By winning they get more revenue and sponsors, so I'm sure winning is a big deal.

What is your biggest thing you love or hate about college football? I love being in that sea of orange on Saturdays at Neyland. The atmosphere is unexplainable.

5.How has the presence of a success football team altered the overall campus environment of your school and your college experience? Yes. When your team is winning the school as a whole is in a good mood. When the team is losing the morale is pretty low.

6.Does college football promote partying? Around here is sure does.

7.Are the athletes given special treatment at your school? If yes, why? I have no idea if they are given special treatment. It may be naive to think they don't, so I'll say I'm sure they do.

8.Do you think that major corporations are a big part of college football? If yes, do you think they are trying to exploit colleges fans and play a too big of a role? Yes. And no I don't think they are trying to exploit fans.

How has the football team's success altered the reputation of your school if at all? Yes. And failures have also altered the reputation. Last year's losing season didn't do much for the school. Made us seem like a big joke.

Now lets keep them coming! Your help will be greatly appreciated.

According to your previous threads (10 or so the same as this one), you started this project back in September. I'm not understanding why your still asking for help two months later.

Maybe i should tell you more about his project. First of all yes, I did start this project in September. This entire project has MANY parts. The teacher gave us a specific calendar with many deadlines we are supposed to follow; newspaper/magazine research, book research, interview athletic directors, go to games, etc and now the next thing I am supposed to is to GET OPINIONS FROM CASUAL FANS USING A SURVEY. It sounds to me that you think I am offtask, behind, or proscrastinating. First of all, Im doing what I am supposed to do and meet my next deadline. Also, I am not asking you to explain to me everything about college football because i didnt do my research, I did my research and I am perfectly on schedule. I am asking for personal opinions.
