College Freshman Alone for Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving is the first I’ll spend without my family of 3, including myself. My mother and I agreed that it would be too much trouble to travel 130 miles in a car and then back for one meal. Even though I don’t want to go home for tomorrow, I do want to do something special for myself. All of my friends went back home and my college doesn’t have any major event planned for students who are here at the college. Does anyone know what I should do for Thanksgiving? Also, I’m lactose intolerant.

Is there a good number of international students at your school? Do they all live in a specific dorm or anything? Usually international students stay during Thanksgiving break and a small dinner may be organized for them, even if it’s not widely publicized. It may be worth doing some looking around and seeing if they’re doing anything you can join. It may end up being a very cool experience.

Movie marathon at the multiplex? Volunteering to help make/serve dinner at the local soup kitchen or shelter?

With or without other students, get outside and enjoy nature. Pack a picnic and go on a hike. Come back and make a nice meal for yourself or gets some Asian takeout (lactose friendly) or head out and see one of the good movies currently at the theater. I bet there’s others around campus wondering what they’re going to do so you can be the ringleader. If not, a little you time to indulge yourself is always a nice treat.

Might do the restaurant thing, thanks.

From your avatar, it looks like you’re in Arizona. I second what doschicos said – go for a hike! Great hiking this time of year in AZ. If possible, find some other people and invite them too.

Some restaurants also serve Thanksgiving dinners (I know Claim Jumper does). If you have a small group, you can call around to see if any places have openings. After that, maybe go to the movies, or have a Netflix marathon at home.

Lots of different options!

You should visit Seven Falls if you haven’t been.

Some restaurants may have a Thanksgiving meal but most restaurants will be closed on Thanksgiving day, so check beforehand.

My first Thanksgiving alone was the year I graduated from college. I volunteered in the am, went to dinner at a diner, went to a movie (Toy Story), and then went to work. I missed my family, but by keeping busy it was not as lonesome. A hike also seems great!
