I'm a current freshman at Penn State main campus and I'm from Durham NC. I went to our career fairs here at PSU and its fairly clear most companies don't offer a lot of stuff to freshmen and summer of your sophomore year is when you can start being competitive to land legitimate internships. I'm planning on majoring in business, but I want to do something sports related after I graduate. Being from Durham I know a lot of people who work at Duke, and I happen to know someone who works in the sports business office there, and they said they'd be happy to have me work as an unpaid intern this summer while I'm home in the mornings, and let me work afternoons at my old paid job as a grocery store cashier in the afternoons/evenings.

My question is does that sound like a pretty good deal for your freshman year of college during the summer? I'm a manager for a varsity sport here at PSU as well, so I have to come back in August for camp. But between interning at Duke/working my old cashier job/being a sports manager, does that set me up fairly well for sophomore year to be competitive with normal internships, specifically something that might be sports/business related?
