College Freshman Year Grades :/

Hey guys,
So I just finished my freshman year at UM. I got 3 A's (two in my intro to spanish courses & one in Organic Chemistry lab), 2 B's (one in English and the other in Gen Chem lab), and 3 C+'s (one in Gen Chem, one in Orgo I, and one in a first year seminar). My GPA is a high 3.0 and I really feel like I screwed up this year. I know I could have worked harder and really regret many of the choices that I made. I am a neuroscience major and a pre-med student. Do you think that I've ruined my chances for medical school? I was very bright and more hard working in high school but really messed up this year. If I work really hard these next 3 years, do I still have a shot? Thank you.

I wouldn’t kiss off medical school after only a year. The C+'s in Chem don’t help.

Want to do medical

Bad at chem

Try law school

A C+ in Chem won’t help him get into law school either but he won’t need it once he gets there.

what has happened to you happens to a lot of people.

a huge percentage of kids decide to be doctors at some point in high school and say they’ll be premed from that point on. its ridiculous how many do. anyway most of them reach college and think “oh wait, these premed classes are hard.”

Medical school is probably not for you. Try something else.

What through you off course, may I ask? Do you think it was “distractions” of college life, poor instruction, or lack of personal focus? Or did you put the time in, but just found it difficult?

I’m still aiming for med school and I think I took advantage of the social scene this year. I also wanted to mention something else though…the science classes at umich are TOUGH. I compared my coursework/exams to students at other Michigan universities (Michigan State, UMich-Flint) and our exams were A LOT harder! I honestly think I would’ve got A’s if I would’ve attended those universities. Are graduate schools aware of the fact that Michigan has a more rigorous system?

Look at it this way – med school will be just as tough so condition yourself to the rigor.

Well if you are getting a C+ in Gen Chem then what do you think medical school will be like?

I think these replies might be a little harsh. I was a chemistry major (switching to biochem or microbio) and had a pretty difficult time in Gen Chem. I took it on Sat. from 8-3 because that and Sunday and late evenings were the only times it was offered.

Those C’s surely aren’t going to help get you into medical school, but that doesn’t mean that you should let one or two more bad experiences completely force you to change what direction you want to go in. You’ve still got years to improve your GPA and I think getting A’s in the higher level sciences will offset the C’s you got in your frosh year science classes. And high MCAT scores will help, too. …but that’s just me.

Don’t give up just yet.

After really looking into medical school admissions, it’s not as bad as some of these people make it out to be. I have 2 or 3 C’s on my transcripts but it’s not gonna kill me. Please don’t be so dramatic. I’ll work harder these next few years. Thank you.

definitely try to get near straight A’s to balance it out because your prospect for med school right now is looking pretty bleak.
