College Fun

What do you students do for fun outside of school; what do you prospective freshman plan on doing for fun in the bay area on your downtime?

Night clubs, bars, concerts, water sports, ski/snowboard, ect?

Please excuse my San Fran ignorance.

i wanna check out the local night club soon.....i've never been into one

The ignorance is fine, as long as you don't call San Francisco "Frisco," that's really, really annoying.

There's not much skiing/snowboarding going on around here, you'll have to go up to Lake Tahoe for that (about 3 hours away). The Bay Area always has good concerts or some kind of music performances going on--Cal has the Greek Theater on campus, which hosts concerts (e.g. The Mars Volta, Death Cab for Cutie). Other venues that come to mind are the Shoreline, Fillmore, and Warfield. I don't know much about the bar or nightclub scene, but there are many clubs in SF, assuming you don't mind the BART ride.

If you're into water sports, I know of Lake Temescal that's right off of Highway 24, but I forget if it's big on water skiing, etc. Again, Lake Tahoe is awesome for that kind of stuff (except in the late spring/summer, of course). For other outdoor activities, I would recommend Golden Gate Park and Point Reyes, except it's kind of difficult to get there without a car. I'm sure you'll find the Bay Area has plenty to do.

Why not call it Frisco? I don't say frisco myself, just sf. but people seem to not like sf being called frisco for some reason?

It's annoying as hell to me and others I know. I prefer San Fransisco, SF or sometimes even SFO (though that refers to the airport).

Call it the The City or S.F. or The Yay Area if you want to keep it hyphy.

Let's so not keep it hyphy. Ever.

^^ Good call.

Oh c'mon, what's wrong with hyphy? Dudes dancing on cars, dancing next to cars, dancing in cars...its like a ghetto version of Footloose! If that's wrong, then I don't want to be right.

did death cab really play at the greek theatre? didn't know that...

yeah, Greek Theatre gets quite a few big names to perform there every summer. This past summer there was Kelly Clarkson (despite how much I hate her)...uh....I can't really remember other performers, but I was pretty drunk a lot of the time, so I have an excuse. I remember listening to tone-deaf morons singing her horrible yet demonically catchy tunes as I was walking down the street that night...

Anyway, summer 2006 will have INXS, RADIOHEAD (WOOOOO), Mark Knopfler/Emmylou Harris, The Flaming Lips, Death Cab For Cutie, and Ben Harper. Not a big Death Cab fan myself, but there's no denying that those tickets will sell fast.

Speaking of hyphy, is there a strong hyphy presence in the student body? I'm hoping there's not.

and don't forget tom petty! that rocked

What the hell is hyphy?

http://www.youtube.com/watch.php?v=1NTLeJUjly8

LOL. The lame version of crunk. Must be a northern california thing.

West coast crunk.

The entire genre has the value of detritus .

Well it's good to know what hyphy means... 185,000 views! the stuff I like on Youtube gets a few dozen hits at the most...

"Night clubs, bars, concerts, water sports, ski/snowboard, ect?"

Clubs: you want 18&over (unless you don't look 18 and have a uhm, good ID )
Popscene is a great 18+ britpop club on thursday nights
http://www.popscene-sf.com/

I hate R&B, most rap so I can't recommend anything there.

Bars: if you figured out the ID thing, lots to choose from in the Mission and other SF neighborhoods. A few in Berkeley and Oakland too. Wednesday night is great at the Ruby Room in Oakland.

Concerts: a lot of pop stuff, just check the free weeklies (SF Guardian) for ads and lineups. There are a few good local acts like Mates of State and Dealership. A lot of great stuff in April, because most of the better Coachella acts go through SF on their way to 5-song sets on tiny stages in Indio.

water sports:
learn to windsurf and sail with the Cal Sailing Club down at the Marina. It's practically free ($55/semester, all-you-can-sail) If you snowboard, you should definitely check out the kiteboarding scene in Alameda, but the lessons are steep (Cal Sailing doesn't do that yet). Once you are decent at windsurfing, you can go to Del Valle reservoir (hot weather, warm clean water), and check out the wineries on the road.

Once you learn to sail, you can get together with friends and rent a boat for an afternoon sail in the Bay.

There are tons of really good restaurants and cafes to check out in Berkeley, SF, Oakland and small towns in Marin and along the coast. You can also BART over and bike in SF neighborhoods, or ferry to Angel Island.

Beaches: Stinson is the best in Marin. Tennessee Beach for a hike and picnic. Baker beach in SF.

Hiking in Marin, but also many places close to campus like Tilden, Briones, redwood parks. There are a lot of great places for dates.

Ski in tahoe - Cal ski Club, or someone's cabin, or get together with 2 or 3 carloads of friends and rent a cabin for the weekend. Ski in tahoe, 1 night in Nevada casinos.

Other tips: check out the Pacific Film Archive (PFA) on campus. You're in berkeley now, time to ditch the Hollywood crap and upgrade.

Check out the classical stuff on campus too, and in SF, and the jazz as well.

tastyb33f, where'd you here about all those shows at the GreeK? I went on the website and didn't see any of those. I'm praying that you're right and radiohead is actually coming.

Yes, they'll be at The Greek on 6/23 and 6/24. Now, to get the tickets..
