i know from highschool... there was a bunch of 4.0uw and stuff and having a 3.99 puts you at, like, the 10th place at my school. so i was wondering how hard it is to get a 4.0 in college? all the 4.0s that graduated last year that now go to college (stanford 3.9... etc) don't have perfect GPAs anymore... it seems like in college 3.5+ is already a good GPA. what are college standards like? becuase 3.5 in highschool looks really low

yeah whats the highest GPA at most colleges?

how hard is it to get a 3.9-4.0 GPA compared to high school?? how many ppl actually get 4.0 GPA in college?

The average GPA at most public schools is around 2.9-3.0, so anything above that is good, especially for grade-deflated majors like science and engineering.

it's very difficult, but not impossible, to get a 4.0 in college. generally, your grades in college aren't as good as they were in h.s.

i'm guessing you would have to spend every minute awake studying to acheive a 4.0 gpa. is any of the classes in college given more weight like AP and honors classes?

yeah.. now i think my friend's sister is amazing... she finished 4 years in 3 years at UNC by taking morethanrequired load and had a 3.96, but now she's in UM grad school and wasnt accepted at harvard or stanford

ouch, maybe your sister didnt do that well in her gmats (or whatever standardized test they take)? with those grades she really should get into those top grad schools.

she's in medschool... i think she had a 35 out of 45 on her MCAT... i dont know if thats a bad or good score

It is very very high. But not high enough for Harvard, they want 36's.

i think her subscore was 14 bio 14 physics 7 verbal... she went to highschool in india and doesnt do very well on verbal

Wow, but yea that weak verbal hurt her. Med schools dont like any section to be less then 10.

4.0s are very very very very hard to come by.

Average graduating GPA at my school is right around 3.1, many classes are curved to an 80, a B- (2.7)

There was 1 4.0 graduate in 03, and 2 in 04.

Very few 4.0 GPAs in college. You will always run into a certain professor who just doesn't give out A's.

i dunno.. i mean at a lot of ivyleague schools it seems as though they all get A's... the average grade at stanford is an A- and something like 85+ percent of students get A's

yeah it depends on the college and the major. But in any case, college GPA will almost always be lower than high school b/c of non-weighted courses. Even with a 4.0 (which believe me I don't have), it would be lower than my average high school GPA (4.6). So at first GPAs will sound low to you but that will change.

4.0 is VERY difficult to get in college. Except for elementary Russian haha :) The department was really inflated.

Anyway, yes, it's hard to get it perfect. There will always be professors who don't like to give out a bunch of A's. Colleges generally curve in the B range. So if you can get yourself a 3.4 or better, then your GPA is great! Other than that, you only have your self-esteem. The most important thing is just getting on the dean's list and Latin honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa) and usually there's a rank cut-off or a GPA cut-off.

Strangely, my college GPA is higher than my high school... makes me happy though!

I'd be so happy with a 3.5-3.7 in college.

It's not that hard to get a 4.0 in graduate school though.

Here's some good news. The company I worked for that hired so many college graduates over the years swore off hiring 4.0s out of college. They'd rather have a 3.7 or 3.8 who showed some sign of having a life during school. That didn't keep them from hiring a 4.0 who was also head of fraternity or the like, of course, but they were serious about wanting people with some balance.

Work hard, but don't forget to play, too.

wow... when you guys say, "curved at B"... does that mean that that's the highest you can get in that class....??? let's say it was physics, or chemistry, even if you get a perfect on every test, you would still get a B??? or is it more like english where the teacher is so subjective and won't EVER give u a paper above 85

No it means that the median is a B but it is usually a B- or C+ median. The curve is set at whatever the professor feels fit to create a nice little standard deviating curve. Or sometimes to get a correct average grade point (like a 2.5-2.7). It really depends on your major/class/school.
