college gpa

^
First of all, a corporate prick?
Who said you have to work for me? Your comment is hostile, and be polite when you want to get into a debate.

Secondly. Read the words carefully. Ideal. You know how many people apply to TOP graduate schools with 3.7, 3.8?
Have you even read the comments from the previous page? Nobody said GPA is the only thing that people looked at. Yes. IDEAL. Get that from dictionary.
Why the top 50 institutions? How do you rank them? by department? by major? by overall?

Please adhere that comment to yourself. I know people got really good GPA and still got turned down by all the those top 5 engineering schools.

People have different preferences. If I do become a billionaire, by all means (you never know), guess what, I wouldn’t even hire someone who’s mouth is full of hostility.

MIT.

Please don’t become a ■■■■■.

Respect people’s preference, and read each word carefully before you lay your hammer on me.

And yes, I am a sophomore. I know nothing about graduate school. You happy?

PS: In some other threads I said if I were to hire someone I would look at the GPA and school, and resume first (which everyone does!). Then I will make the guy solve the problem. If he passes it and I think he’s a good candidate, I would hire him. So before you judge people with only a single comment, read everything that I have written in the past.

I tried to respond to your post which is the 3rd post in this thread but I was looking for the quote button. No, that’s a big shocker to me. Well, I don’t rank them, but there people who does that. See 1st sticky of this section of the forum. Yes, they should be ranked by department, major, etc.

No, it is true, with averages being 30, 40, or 50 you think students will get good grades on absolute terms? Sure that’s also true, but I also know of people with not so excellent GPA get into top schools, and that includes MIT. And what is your definition of top schools: top 5? I wasn’t being hostile or impolite it was a knee jerk reaction to your post. Your post gave the impression that a 3.5 engineering student is “average” while a 3.7 guy is “not that big of a deal.” That it self is an insult. People actually have to work very hard for that kind of grades. Any school with 3.5 for engineers then there is something seriously wrong with its engineering dept.

Not a ■■■■■, i just don’t visit and post that often. I have the stats of entire engineering graduate schools. Anyway, you do realize that there are other great engineering schools where the whole school isn’t filled with science geeks from across the globe?

I wonder what kind of problem you would give if he was an EE. Look through an analog circuit or VLSI book and find the hardest problem? lol.

^ Hahahah
Let me start with this one

Depending on what the company does, and what position he’s seeking, and what I am hiring. Simple answer.
WOOO Infinite possibility! Go on and make your wish.

Similarly, I say 3.8, 3.9 are insulted by your comment.
Now we are both insulting people who get GPA starting from 3.0 to 4.0.

Please open your eyes:

Is 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, 4.0 that big a deal in the eyes of fair employers? HELL NO.
This is why I said NO, NOT THAT BIG A DEAL.
Getting first honor? Slightly, but school performance ~=/= work performance.

Now graduate school.
When it comes to admission, there are numerous things people take into consideration. We are all humans: We see an MIT student with 3.7, impressive. 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 still very impressive because people assume that MIT is a very difficult school.
What about people like me from CUNY school? Is my school not challenge enough, so that I have to get 3.8, 3.9 in order to impress the admission office? No.

You are making an allegation like: “jwxie, you are insulting people who have lower GPA. You don’t know anything about engineering. You haven’t taken any advance engineering courses so you think 3.8, 3.9 are easy to get.”

Hmmm? What are you talking about? 3.5 for an engineer? So all the engineering students have to get lower than 3.5 and this is how the school is being ranked? This is what you are suggesting, according to the quote.

So what if they are IQ 160, and they are super genius that they all get A+? I can’t even get into that kind of school because I am not smart at all. I wished there is one.

Look. No one is insulting the people who didn’t get 3.7, 3.8. I didn’t, as a sophomore. You can called me dumb or whatever, because freshman courses are usually easy and people usually get decent grades for those intro courses.

I don’t know if you are having trouble with your life or what. You are overreacted.

3.5 is a good GPA realistically. We know that. A- is 3.66 in my school, and B+ it’s probably like 3.2 or a bit less than that. Such gap brings down the average rapidly.

We don’t have that many 3.7 or better GPA students at CCNY either. I don’t know about you and your school. The students here worked very hard. Many of them are continuing-adults and they manage to get good grades, 3.5 or above. Yes. Our school is cheap as hell because it’s CUNY. So people assume that our professors are being easy on us. No, not at all.

Culturally, I am Chinese, and I look at 3.3 as a bad GPA. This is personal preference. Did I insult you, sir? You simply overreacted. Personal preference =/= reality.

I do realize the fact that engineering courses are harder in general, and I didn’t get good GPA either. I wished I got 3.7, 3.8. I didn’t. Honestly, if I work hard and I get a 3.3, I see it as an accomplishment, although I can do better if I have another chance.

Jwxie, I have read your last post carefully. I am glad to see that you are indeed a human rather than that big corporate dude who just would B*tch at his applicants for not getting 4.0. There must been some misunderstanding.

I don’t get it.

Right, basically there isn’t much difference between 3.5-4.0.

Agreed to an extent.

Sorry, I think I wasn’t clear there. What I meant to say was that **average **grades of 3.5(B+) for an engineering dept indicates something adversely wrong with the dept. Of course there will be group of students who will get A’s, but average grades for each individual students being 3.5 or B+ is simply ridiculous.

Right, typically engineering professors works very hard to give bad grades to their students compared to other majors, even our high school valedictorian knew it and he was smart to choose health related field(MD) over engineering.

That probably makes sense why. I usually have hard time with Asian professors lol. I remember one time I was literally burned after my solid state devices exam. Luckily, in engineering rest of the students also takes a good beating, which is why I’ve said earlier in an absolute grading nearly all student would fail such impossible exam. I am not talking about a stupid elementary calc or physics exam lol.

Anywho, take care.

What engineering school has an average GPA of 3.3 or higher? Like specifically, which one(s)? I’ve very sure that at most schools, a 3.3 is a fair bit above average.
