My counselor suggested I apply to mainly SAT optional schools because of my low SAT scores. I really want to improve my SAT scores (it's a 1350 right now) so I can apply to other schools because it seems like my SAT scores are really holding me back. I have a 4.0 GPA, i've taken honors since freshman year(mainly Latin and English) and a few others. I'm currently in my junior year and taking all honors(Pre-calculus, English, Anatomy and Physiology, French 4) and 2 APs (AP Latin and AP U.S. History). I'm on the National Honors Society and treasurer, I've been taking piano for almost 11 years and in my spare time I teach piano to children in my neighborhood, I've done a lot of community service, freshman year I tried out for Varsity Softball and made the team, I'm part of Junior Classics League, Classics Club, Massachusetts Junior Classics League, I work as well, I help translate English to Cantonese for people in a community nearby. I was planning on applying to schools like Holy Cross, Wheaton, Bates, and Stonehill, but I really want to apply to B.C (my brother goes there now and I just love that school but I'm not sure if I could get in because of my low SAT scores). Any tips on how to improve my SAT score?

Is that an unweighted 4.0 gpa? If it is, then I think you can go beyond the schools that you mentioned, unless of course, you don’t feel they would be a good fit for you. I haven’t taken the SAT yet, but I am in an SAT course right now and I’ll give some quick tips. For math, it’s really a matter of managing your time and if you’re in Honors PreCalc, then you should definetly be able to score atleast a 700. For the other two, it’s simply practice, and READING. The more challenging books you read, the better you will get at comprehension as well as your vocabulary. Good Luck!

Yeah it’s unweighted. I took an SAT course but it didn’t seem to help. I am in honors precalc, but math is probably one of my weakest areas along with reading. Thanks for your tips!(:

wow, an unweighted 4.0 in that schedule is impressive! did you look into other LAC’s such as Bowdoin, Colby, Amherst, Williams, Middlebury, etc?

I personally hated taking the SAT’s. I took it twice and I didn’t do that much better. BTW my scores where real low. My counselor and I came to an understanding that I wasn’t a good test taker and she didn’t hold that against me. She recommended schools that she knew I could definitely get into. I applyed to some of them and I got in. In the end I didn’t end up at any of them but thats another story.

Longstory short, apply to a state school, wait a year and transfer out to your dreamschool. If you get enough credits, the college you are interested in won’t even look at you HS transcript or SAT scores.

haha thanks, and no I didn’t because my SAT scores are extremely low. And in case you may have misunderstood, it’s a 1350 overall, not reading and math alone =x I feel like I should apply to a few reach schools but with my SAT scores I’m not 100% sure

Yeah, I hate the SAT’s as well, my counselor thinks I should apply to mainly SAT optional schools since she’s pretty sure that I’ll get into most or all of the ones she gave me. But I might think about the State school then transfering, thanks :]

The sticky thread with xiggi’s method is particularly good, look for the summary.
