Hello. What is the college honors program? All I understood from the welcome was that you take extra classes and receive recognition when you graduate.

What are the pros and cons?

Is it more competitive?

Can I withdraw if I apply and am accepted?

Thanks!

There's a comprehensive thread here with almost everything you need to know:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-los-angeles/477814-about-ucla-s-college-honors-program.html

But the recognition is minimal for graduate school, etc., so the real benefit of Honors is the priority registration for classes. It's not really competitive, and you don't have to do it.

Also, there's requirements for getting in... for incoming freshmen, it's 2080+ SAT and a 4.1 UC GPA, or top 3% ranked in your school. You can also apply after the first quarter, though, but the GPA requirement doesn't come to mind at the moment. It'll be in the link above though. :]

If you want greater interaction with professors and are intellectually motivated, I'd highly recommend it. The two honors collegiums have opened a lot of doors for me, both in terms of knowledge gained and in terms of the connections I've made with the professors. This seems like a side benefit, but you get whole quarter checkout from YRL, and i'm saving some money on textbooks that way too. So the little perks aren't too bad. If you really enjoy learning and are intellectually motivated, then you should do it

I heard priority registration is a big enough benefit to join honors. is that true?

^ yep! definitely the best perk of honors.
priority isn't perfect, but it's a very nice thing to have, especially your first two years (or until you get around junior standing).
